Didn't know they had that nice of a display there. Will be a good place to visit over the winter months after the crowds clear out. Good work on the correction. Wonder how much they researched that mistake.

I remember, years ago, walking through the coin exhibit. On the wall were displayed
a bunch of gold coins which no doubt drew the attention of the casual visitor.
But on the other side of the room a coin was sitting quietly in a display case, with the description:
"1913 Liberty Head Nickel."
I was more impressed by this that anything else that I saw.

That is great! Too bad they didn't credit you in the new display.

The 1913 Liberty nickel was in the Legendary Coins case when I was there.

As a young boy we visited the Smithsonian and the 1849 $20 gold piece really struck me as unique. That was close to 40 years ago and I still remember seeing it.

That 1804 dollar is beautiful! Thanks for posting those pictures as it'll be quite some time before I go to DC.

Glad to hear you told them about their mistake. Kind of funny when they have a 1984 cent there and mention it was 1986 in the description.

I took a bunch of photos of the displays, before they took it down.

What else did they have on display? Do they still have wall full of gold coins on display?

I think that any respectable museum would own up to the mistake after due diligence.

That was back before they ripped out the numismatic collection and put it in storage so they could remodel the are allowing you to watch the restoration of the Star Spangled Banner from up above. Since then they have not had any really large numismatic displays. Much of the wall of gold was from the Eli Lily collection that wa donated to the Smithsonian in I believe 67 or 68.
