Quote: The "change" stays on the books, so the next time Joe comes in and buys a couple of bags of groceries, the amount remaining on the books is reduced. This continues until all of the value in the gold coin has been converted to groceries.
Theres about a good of a chance of them giving you more goods in the future for free as there is of no one dieing during the initial panic. Theres no chance that happens during a time when things are scare. More like Joe pulls out his gold coin and sees a gun get pointed at him to hand it over. Or word gets around Joe has gold and his place gets ransacked. JMs right silver is the far better one to have for such a situation unless youre ultra wealthy and can stack for the long haul protected until a new government is installed ect. You also get far more silver for the buck making it the far wiser doomsday just in case currency. There other reasons to get gold depending on youre view of the market for it, but as a SHTF backup theres far better options

Yes, of course. If we're talking about several years in the future and I had the money to spend.

Hey Ed, I'm not THAT old, but I remember when I was 7 or 8 and my Mom would send me to the store with a Quarter to get a loaf of bread! I would jump on it because there was just enough change to get some sweet tarts! Now, not only could you not get a loaf of bread that cheap, but there is no way I would send my 7 or 8 year old a half mile away to the store; by themselves!

Or word gets around Joe has gold and his place gets ransacked. First of all, it's NOT for free. It is in exchange for the gold handed over initially. Also, I was referring to doing business with a store to get food or other needed items. Any store manager who screwed or even tried to screw a customer this badly during terrible times would likely get strung up in front of the store as a reminder to others of what not to do. (insert pic of a LARGE mob with torches and pitchforks here) Also, Joe and his buddies are shopping together and ALL of them are well armed. Quote: There other reasons to get gold depending on youre view of the market for it, but as a SHTF backup theres far better options Indeed. Want to buy a large piece of land or a home? Unless silver becomes incredibly valuable, you'll be rolling up in a truck to deliver enough silver to pay for it. Or, you could use a handful of gold coins instead. The primary use for gold, IMHO, would be to buy large expensive items or to be portable in case you had to run for it. A lb. of gold coins is a LOT easier to carry and secrete on your person than 50 lbs. of silver. Quote: Hey Ed, I'm not THAT old, but... Well, I'm not surprised. Not many of the people on here have successfully survived as long as I have. But everyone wants to! Ha Ha! My wife has an affectionate term for me and it is "old poop". Not sure where that came from but what the hey. After a while, everything just slides along. Quote: ...but there is no way I would send my 7 or 8 year old a half mile away to the store; by themselves! Agreed! With the way that the times are today, there is NO WAY I would let my 10 year old grand daughter do that either. Grandpa would go with her and he would be packin'. I guess that this is what we get for coddling child molesters and other perverts. Back when I was a kid in the 1950s, child molesting and kidnapping were extremely rare events. They were rare because those who might be tempted to do such things KNEW what would happen to them if they did it. They also knew that they would be caught... neck stretching time. No recidivism, ever.

Right I get that but in a disaster situation where gold and silver is being used, its for all intensive purposes for free if you dont give them anything then. After all what are you going to do call the cops? Any open store would surely be armed and have his friends guarding it as well working as a team

My guess is that EVERYONE would be armed. As was once said, "An armed society is a polite one".
Seriously, though, word of mouth advertising would be about all that was left in a SHTF situation and any store that does not provide real value to its customers would very soon find that they did not have any customers. This might not be the case in places that only have one store, but who knows for sure?

Of course this is all assuming theyre even selling and not just taking shelter in their store for supplies

Quote: Of course this is all assuming theyre even selling and not just taking shelter in their store for supplies Indeed so. There are MANY ways that could play out and much depends on the extent of the disaster confronting us. If there is still some inter-state commerce, then the store *might* be able to restock from time to time IF they have an acceptable form of money with which to buy those supplies. Holing up in the store is an idea but with hundreds of starving people at the doors, might not work too well. If people get sufficiently hungry, even "long pork" starts to look pretty good... and a nice fat store keeper might look ever better.

I agree its hard to say for sure with the different ways to play out. If theres still some form of supply line I would think theyd sell at high prices, if not probably try and hoard it themselves. Personally I think the best place to hole up would be a costco. The ones around me at least are all brick with no windows and locking steel doors with chain gates. Only a handful of ways in and easily defended. Plus they have everything you need and a nice booze selection to pass the time

Stinky too once the freezers quit. It would make a pretty good place to resupply, though. I imagine that they will be looted out within a week or two. People will take stuff that they don't even want to use as trading goods, as well as the stuff that they do want and need. Once the gas runs dry, that will stop for the most part but by then those shelves will be pretty bare. Maybe one of the first places to recover after a SHTF scenario hits will be the small country stores, where people can sell or trade any produce, eggs, milk, chickens, etc. that they have for other locally produced things. Maybe silver will be useful then, as a trade facilitator. Would be interesting to see how the pricing of various things, including labor, is worked out and what standards of exchange will evolve.

Thats the beauty of costco, they have generators you can keep them going a little longer, and roof access to get rid of things like that without exposing your self to chaos of opening a door Quote: Maybe one of the first places to recover after a SHTF scenario hits will be the small country stores, where people can sell or trade any produce, eggs, milk, chickens, etc. that they have for other locally produced things. Theyll have a better shot of being self sustaining with farm land near them in the majority of the country or at least a lot of wild game and people will know each other instead of just depending on strangers

Does this mean that they won't shoot me right way, if I wave my Executive Membership card at them? Quote: Small towns, especially ones out of the way should be the first to start recovering. Small is good in these terms.

To answer your question . . . I've been buying gold for decades, it's way more expensive now than it was when I first started, but as long as I can afford to buy it I will. And yes, I buy all the other PMs too so in a SHTF scenario I have many .90 dimes on hand.

I've been putting away a bit of gold, and will continue to buy, but more valuble to me in a SHTF scenario, are laying hens, been stockpiling them too!
