Coin & Paper money stores and banks are great for getting you started. If you have grandparents maybe one of them has notes they kept all these years and are willing to pass onto you.

I'd say once you built up a foundation, move onward to ebay and Heritage Auctions which is what I use now to find harder to find notes.
Always try to buy in the best condition you can afford as a note in About UNC is a better buy than 5 notes in Fine+ condition. At least that is what I believe.
