Whizb4ng - thanks for the feedback! I have toyed with foreign and ancient coins, and I do hope to list some in the future, when I have a big enough collector base to support it.
It is confusing at first, I completely understand that - it's totally outside the realm of what we're used to. And I fully acknowledge and attest that I've had to apply some strange rules to the site that are outside the norm of the "penny auction" world, as well. This has all been driven by customer feedback with the goal of providing a more fun, more successful customer experience.
Despite this, I know that while a lot of customers have a great experience when they get things figured out, there are customers that do not have a great experience. I cannot control any facet of the auction, it's really down to the bidders and how things work out. I do everything I can to keep customers, and when I lose one I do my best to make sure that in leaving they leave as happy as I can make them.
I have a few more things to do, and chief among them is explain the site better. For now, the best way is to watch the auctions as they happen.
Thank you for your interest, I sure appreciate it!

So let's have a look at how my customers did a few weeks ago. Of course, past performance is no guarantee of future results. (I started looking at this week's packages, but thought better of it because it's theoretically possible to figure out users, and I respect my user's privacy. If I mix it up a bit, you won't be able to tell.)
A few weeks ago, I shipped out one package with three items valued around $32. That user didn't buy bids that week, he won coins the week before, too, and that week before he spend $20 on bids. Even if you drastically disagree with my valuations or grading, it's clear that user did incredibly well. I happen to know what collection he's working on, and he did great! I'm so pleased...
Let's see. Another user from a while ago... Okay, I shipped out 4 coins valued at $67 - some neat type coins, a modern coin and some silver. That user spent about $60 on bids over a two week period - but this only includes shipment from one week. So that one did, again, quite a bit better than breakeven.
Not to mention they're having a lot of fun and getting coins for their collections they wouldn't normally see. There are many more examples like this. I didn't choose people I knew did well, I just picked random people. I could do more, but I have to get back to work!

I have noticed the button for Coin Sniper and just assumed it was a coin specific auction site built like ebay. Reading the descriptions here has me very very intrigued and I will be looking into it soon!

carmykle, I was reading your quote and it made me think of something I recently read: "Money doesn't solve all of your problems, but it solves your money problems." Hehehe... was a statement made by a person that had significant money problems because they had too much money!
Anyway, let's look at how things went this week - not for everyone, but for the auction winners. Every day of the week, there was numismatic silver sold below melt, including the cost of shipping. Sometimes significantly so!
Past performance does not guarantee future results. Everyone I've talked to is having fun, but of course I don't hear from everyone. The highlight of the week so far is an 1860 O Half Dollar that sold for a total cost to the buyer (including shipping) of about $24. That doesn't account for grouped or consolidated shipping, which will alleviate some of the shipping cost. The coin grades (to me) Very Fine details, net Very Good for damage, and I value it around $40.
Yesterday, a low MS Franklin sold to an experienced buyer for a total cost of about $8 shipped; again, that does not account for grouped shipping. It's a '55 I grade around 62, I value it around $25.
I've worked very hard to make sure that the only people not getting anything are the ones that don't take the time to figure it out. I do my best to provide excellent service to both those who become good and those who are unable to get it figured out. You can't please everyone all of the time, but I sure try.
This is something new and different, I consider each of my customers as if they walked through the door into my physical shop, and I try to treat them with the same respect as I would anyone were I running a physical shop. I consider everyone as helping me do something fun and different, they're all part of our journey to make the site a success.
My customers' success is what I'm after, and I hope to gain a little success of my own by facilitating. The jury is still out. There are those who are nervous or scared to try something different, something new, and I totally understand and respect that sentiment. There are others who are willing to give it a try, and I do what I can to reward those people who help my business become successful.

I just found out about these auctions, and really find it all amazing. I knew Rusty in Facebooks last year, but I had no idea his website had these auctions; I guess I just thought it would be another website redirecting to auctions on ebay or elsewhere. But this a really cool idea! One thing... where do the coins come from? is Rusty buying them, or do the members also auction their own coins? Can you bid from outside the US? Do you pay P&P?

Silver' , that is one question I have as well. I was thinking this was something on ebay where your bids are posted for you. I am somewhat confused, these are separate auctions that Rusty is putting up himself, at least that is what I'm thinking. I'm interested, BUT if those coins I see currently on there are our choices than I'm not as interested. I'm just lost on this........but it is interesting.

I don't know what happened... I was going to say I don't have any problems with the choices -since most of them 5 minutes ago would suit my collection- but now there are only 4 to choose from. I'm guessing many people are passing on this idea for the same reason as both of us... we thought he was redirecting to ebay. Maybe that's something Rusty should take into account to attract the interest of more people; because the idea IS really interesting -at least for me-.

Hello silvermaniac and grancap74!
So let's see... The auctions just happened - so if you weren't around to watch them end, you missed them!
silvermaniac: I am buying the coins. At this time I'm not taking others' consignments. Also, sadly, because of my shipping costs and arrangements, I'm not yet able to do International shipments - not even to Canada. Looks like you're from Spain, so I'm afraid we can't do business yet.
grancap: The auctions change every day. You can see in the "Upcoming Numismatic Auctions" which coins are planned, generally for the next week. At the bottom of the section, there is a link to "view all". I'm currently working on posting next Thursday's and next Friday's auctions on the site.
There are numbers underneath each coin image - this timer represents a countdown clock for the time until the auction ends. When the timer reaches zero, the auction is "on the block". It is open for bidding for usually about a day in advance of the auction, but the final bids are always placed at or AFTER the countdown timer reaches 00:00:00. If you're interested in watching - and some people do find it great entertainment to watch - show up when the timer is around 0 and see what happens. Sometimes not a whole lot, sometimes bidding commences and it's exciting to see who will win.
Thank you for posting your curiosity! I'm open to answer any questions I can. I try to check this thread regularly.

That's a pity; I was looking forward to trying it. Are you planning on doing it worldwide?
Thanks for your answers anyway. One question more though... where do you get the coins to auction; you just buy them in your local coin shop?

silvermaniac, sorry - thought I answered this last night. I get coins from all over the place; wherever I can get the best deal.

I'd like to do worldwide, the issues are: customs and insurance, the unpredictable amount of time taken to ship (customs again), and cost.
Ideally, I'd like to have a free shipping model; that can never work with shipping Internationally.

Don't know if this thread is still being monitored but am I correct that a person doesn't start bidding until the countdown timer reaches zero?
