I know Jon, I hate to see a piece of history go. We've had the same composition since 1866, but I fully believe the US Mint won't tolerate losing money on them much longer. I was reading that the RCM can literally create any electromagnetic signature needed on their plated steel blanks, so I suspect their blanks will be our next composition change. Britain and New Zealand have started using them as well.
I can say with absolute certainty that my nickel Whitman collection will close on exactly the last year of the current composition. I will not have plated steel junk in the book...period.

DoubleEagle,

Are you saying we will still have nickels, but they will be made of something else?

Great info, NS. Do you record any data on proof finds?

Thanks for the update. I'm also in MD and after a 6 month hiatus due to grad school kicking my butt I am even more excited to crack open another box nickels!

Also, just wondering, but of your finds do you know how many would grade over MS-60?

Great peice of work Nickelsearcher! I enjoy reading these. To think there are an estimated 544,000 Liberties still in circulation! I wonder how many are 1885?

I haven't searched nickels in a few months being in college and all, but I may be able to do some this week. So far I am behind you with 115 boxes, or 230,000 nickels searched. I've still got the 50-D and the 39-D left to find.

Thanks for the information, and keep up the good work!

A few replies to the questions ...

Actually .... no. Anyone with enough interest can re-create such a spreadsheet for themselves.

I have found a total of six proof Jefferson in my searches ... average is 1 find every 50,000 coins searched.

My roll-found set from approximately 1964 onward will grade MS ... and all the coins 1987 and beyond are MS Full Steps.

Likely very few ... but that would indeed be a coin roll find to share.

Thanks for the replies ... hopeful my research and data sharing supports your personal enjoyment of the hunt for USA nickels.

Yeah, Jon. I fully expect the US Mint to adopt Canada's multi-ply plated steel for nickels. I read that the RCM can manipulate the electromagnetics of the plating to match just about any other alloy out there. Jarden Zinc has licensed the process as well. I do expect the old nickels will be withdrawn if we go to plated ones. Canada has withdrawn most of the old coins as well.

David, thank you for the fascinating presentation of your research. I have reread it numerous times since you first posted it and am sure that I will refer back to it again.

I love nickel hunting and look forward to every Tues. when I can get another box from my local bank.

I am a newbie to roll searching ( 1 box per week for 3 mo's) plus a gallon jug of nickels from my mother-in-law. I am trying to fill an old Whitman 38 through 61 that I started back in my teens in the 60's. Your research explains why I still have the 44s and 50D holes empty. The other empty hole, 58 , I will attribute to bad luck. Your findings on 44S and 50D indicate that I have a lot of boxes to search yet before I find them.

My 62 to 2013 is only missing the two 2009's. I seem to find an upgrade or two for this set in every box.

Thank you again and I look forward to your next update, in the future.

Nickelsearcher:

Earlier I posted my finds for the last two years. I didn't calculate a find rate in that post. I went back to calculate it and the results are:

overall find rate 1.43%

Decade
1930s 1 find every 1,469 coins (found 110)
1940s 1 find every 197 coins (found 819)
War silver 1 find every 1,456 coins (found 111, 31 in one box)
1950s 1 find every 126 coins (found 1,280)

Liberty 1 find every 161,600 coins (found 1)
Buffalo 1 find every 4,753 coins (found 34)
Proofs 1 find every 8,505 coins (found 19)

You are indeed welcome ... I try to publish an update every 10,000 coins searched ... currently at 307,200 nickels searched so an update coming shortly.

Same for me ... blue Whitman 9009 dates 1938-1961.

Mine is held together with scotch tape and a prayer.

I house my set 1962 to date in a Dansco 7113 album ... much more elegant storage solution ...

I could transfer my Whitman coins to the Dansco ... however still hoping for upgrades in the earlier years.

Excellent work cmajlz ... I just now caught up with your post on the two years nickel search data ... fascinating presentation.

Appreciate your conversion to 'find rates' ... hopeful that you found that concept useful as a comparative tool.

Amazed at your war silver find rate ... 1 every 1,456 coins searched ... I am at 1 every 2,752 coins searched.

Hoards count ... such is the result of 31 war silver in one box!

I commend to all the humble search for USA nickels ... IMHO the only current 70+ year old series that one can reasonably hope to complete from local bank rolls.

I am not sure which is more amazing:
A) your finds
B) your record keeping and statistics
C) you made it through that many coins with all your fingers and sanity intact.

interesting insights and a good read.

I know this is an old post but I found it years ago while I was searching nickels. Prior to that I had not recorded my finds verses searched. I started a spreadsheet along with formula minutia and have now searched over $5000 worth of nickels. Did you ever finish your search with the 38S and 43D? I am missing 5, the 38D, 39S, 44D, 44S, & 50D.
