I've got too much silver already, probably just get some gold and a bunch of silver (If my dealer had access to decent quality scrap at the time) or just get ~25g of Gold.

If I have $1K to spare, I'd prefer older junk silver.

Whenever the gold/silver ratio is over 50, I go with the silver. I have a mix of Gov't. issue such as silver eagles, maple leafs & libertads. I also have some generic rounds and bars. IMO, can't go wrong with either. I don't have any 90% silver coinage (junk silver). I just prefer the other.

If gold drops 20% and you have an ounce, your down $245 If silver drops 20% and you have an ounce your down $3.72 The same can be said for a net gain. But when it comes down to it & you have $1000 invested in either... 1% is $10 no matter how you chop it up.

50/50 ratio as per dollar value, spend $1000(or whatever dollar value you prefer) on silver then don't buy anymore silver until you have spent about the same on gold, rinse and repeat. keep it simple.

"let's say it was a prize that had to be claimed in gold or silver." Oh, well that's simple then. I'd go with gold because it's much easier to hide and it's worth 66X more than silver, and it's denser. My answer still depends on the reasons of why to own. My reasons are different than yours and from everyone else's based on their experience and needs. It's easy to assume that everyone's in the same boat when we are not. A SHTF experience is different in the USA than in any other nation. My experience with junk silver is that it is junk, but an American will have a differing opinion. An ounce of silver won't buy you much in supplies - it's just too abundant on this continent. Europe was totally flooded with hyperinflation even from just the silver that the Spanish Empire brought home - and there's more to be found underground! That's not to say that gold is rare or anything close but these days it's still worth more than silver. I think people go with silver over gold because they have blind faith that it will shoot back to pre-central banking days levels of 10 or 16 or 20:1 ratios.

Quote: An ounce of silver won't buy you much in supplies...it is junk. Well that depends. Are you buying dinner or a boat? Try portioning an ounce of gold out for some coffee, a pound of salt, a box of ammo or a tank of gas.

So let's say I win big at the Casino and my wife says "You should spend a grand on coins!" I'd throw down on a Roosevelt First Spouse Unc first. (I really want this but likely won't be able to afford one) Dig up one of those Doctor Who silver dollars from the Perth Mint, yes with the TARDIS. Fill out my Unc Silver Eagles. Man that $1,000 went fast!
