well I have to say this is an area of coin collecting that sounds interesting but requires a great deal of patience... you gents (and ladies) of the ancient world certainly have my respect.

That's a brass brush. I use them all the time. They won't harm bronze coins. I also use a brass cup brush on heavily encrusted coins. Don't worry about "ruining" coins, you can't hurt them too much with a brass brush. just don't use a steel brush.

You CAN damage a coin with a brass brush. Oh yes. Been there, done that.

Used thoughtfully they're relatively safe, but I've scratched up the patina on a coin with a brass brush before too.
