I love my PCGS holders! I need something to keep the drool off of the coins when I pass them around to fellow collectors. I will confess that I have broken a few slabs in my past by using a vise and slooowly applying pressure, with proper eye protection.

Quote: If they want to preserve authenticity they could just do safety seals that make it obvious when it is has been opened. Maybe the holo and the grade could shred when opened or something. NGC does something like that on the GSA and Redfield Hoard coins. The point of making them so hard to open is not only for authenticity, but for protection. They are made to protect the coin and be durable to withstand breaking.

There are plenty of durable designs I can think of that wouldn't require power tools to open.

Quote: These holders are evil Then they've done their job! They weren't designed with those in mind who would break them open.

Personally, I hate the holders. As a long time collector, they are a fairly new development for me, and it took me a long time to get used to them. I collect early dollars though, and with the way things are these days with counterfeits and altered coins, what choice do I have? Even if I am the most experienced coin grader around (and I am not), who would buy these coins from my heirs raw? Currently, I am assembling a collection of civil war coins, and have purchased them raw and placed them in airtites. But I will purchase the half and silver dollar graded, which I will crack out. These will be my first crack-outs and I am nervous about damaging the coins, so I am grateful for the advice given here.

That is a nice looking set, Krusti-Koin! Do show us it when you get the half dollar and dollar in there.

Thanks! I certainly will post again when the set is complete. I am on the trail of a dollar now. I learned quite a lot building this set. If I wanted proofs (and had the funds), I could put this set together very easily. But to find nicely circulated problem free coins, that is another matter. It has been great fun assembling this set. Thanks again!

Do not think I dont like slabs. I have NO problem with them at all. I have plenty of coins still in them. I also place my Morgans, Peace and a lot of Ikes in my own slabs. I like that better for my dollar coins than a Dansco. At least for the Morgans and Peace. Though I may end up doing that as well.
