1791 8 reales, Viceroyality of Peru, Lima mint. Several years passed between the death of Charles III in 1788 and the appearance of Charles IV's portrait on Spanish colonial coinage. During this transitional period, the portrait of Charles III was used with the legend CAROLUS IV or CAROLUS IIII. By 1791, the other colonial mints had changed their 8 reales designs to feature the portrait of Charles IV with the exception of the Lima mint, which continued to issue coins with Charles III's portrait for part of the year.

1790 Riksdaler, Sweden, Stockholm mint. My inspiration for acquiring this particular coin comes from the Swedish detective series, Anno 1790. It's truly unfortunate that this superb period show only ran for one season. You can find some episodes on the internet or the DVDs from the popular vendors.

1790 8 reales, Viceroyalty of New Spain, Mexico City mint. Another transitional issue with the bust of Charles III and the legend of Charles IV as CAROLUS IIII.

1790 8 Reales, Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, Potosí mint. This is another example of the transitional type with Charles III's bust and the CAROLUS IV legend.
