Very nice upgrade DE! Here's my O-107a with a question. Mine has the die clash which I had thought would be a later die state, but yours shows the stars being drawn to the edge more and seems to show a small die crack above star 2 that mine doesn't show. Even the reverse appears to have more letters drawn to the edge. This would imply yours would be the later die state wouldn't it? If so, does yours show any signs of the dies being polished to remove the clash?

I think yours is an earlier state o.107 and mine is a bit later where the dies have been lapped to remove the clash. I see a very faint ridge to the right of star 3, mostly likely a remanent of the clash after lapping. My relief is also lower, another indicator of lapping. The one thing they couldn't lap out on mine was the stripe clash in the ear area ;) Overton book says o.107a has a die crack from the neck to star 4. I am seeing the clash lines on yours, but not seeing the described die crack from the pictures.

Are you saying that there first was the O-107 than came O-107a and finally reworked to become O-107 again? The Mint did a reground work on the 1818 quarter: http://coins.ha.com/itm/bust-quarte...a/292-5767.s br /

Completely awesome 1818 CBHs! Wow! I am in awe! Those examples are absolutely beautiful! I'm on the road and don't have access to my pictures, but I'll post my 1818 O-107 when I get home and we can all determine where mine fits in!!

Quote: Overton book says o.107a has a die crack from the neck to star 4. It also states "a lump in the field by mouth". To ME, this seems like he misidentified the clash as the "die crack and lump". Could he possibly had specimens with lesser defined clashing? Or maybe they were already polished/lapped to some degree, but not to the extent to fully remove the clash? Just seems strange that the clash fits the description to a T, save for it being identified as a crack and lump instead of a clash.

That I cannot answer. Would be interesting to see if there is one with an actual crack running from the neck to star 4, as described by Overton. Inquiring minds want to know...

Nice provenance on the coins in the last two links. Meyer and Witham. I will have to do some digging on this Overton. I have a second one that will have to examine when I get the chance. DM's are fairly straightforward and there is an established emission order, but die states differences within DM's are definitely murkier waters.

From my die state specialist, o.107a, as defined in the 4th and 5th editions of the Overton book does not exist. We are simply seeing variance between early and later states of o.107. The clash mark running to the 4th star appears to have been mistaken for a die crack. Clash marks are not used to define new die states.
