As has been said ebay "sold" auctions are the best for most coins. The place where the online guides have any relevance is for very high grade; Full "bells, beard, whatever"; and coins with amazing eye appeal.

There are coins that grade AU and yet have such an outstanding strike, luster and surfaces; that they bring many times over other AU, even, MS coins.

When I'm really doing research on a coin, I use every guide I can find: ebay, PCGS, NGC, Numismedia FMV, Heritage, and last but not least, my bank account
