I'm glad the market prices are dropping. Since the publication of the Richter catalog, schutzenfest medal prices have increased only because Richter included prices in his catalog.
The prices I quoted previously were pre and post Richter and fairly accurate.

There may not be much interest in this forum for schutzenfest medals but there is quite a strong following in Switzerland and Germany. The proof being many auctions taking place throughout the year showing high prices realized and good numbers at the auctions.

My Father has been selling medals for over 20 years here in the US and has quite a strong customer base. My hope is that interest will continue to increase with people seeing the rarity and artistic quality of these fine medals.

CMG,

I would normally value medals based on an extensive history of purchased medals as well as many years of experiance and past sales. For diplomacy sake, I valued the medal asked about earlier based on 'old market value' (pre-Richter) and the Richter catalog itself. It appears there is quite a bit of interest here seeing the amount of views to this thread, if only interest in looking at the medals. I have always felt that schützenfest medals are some of the most beautiful numismatic pieces around, that is why I collect them. I am glad I can share them with this fine community.

We have a couple of contacts in Switzerland as well as visiting from time to time. I was last there in 2006 for a UBS auction.

You are correct, most schützenfest medals found in the internet are not in the condition I would purchase and are usually common too, that is why I don't purchase this way too often. Our contacts in Switzerland as well as a few other avenues keep us fairly well supplied. My Father has been collecting since 1961 and myself since around 1980. Any additionally contacts may prove helpful however, and I would be glad to hear from you regarding them.

Thank you CMG

Thanks for putting this thread and pictures together. This is the most informative thread I have seen on Swiss Shooting medals.
From the mintages these would appear to be simmilar to 19th Century U. S. Mint medals. Beautifull in design (a few dogs here and there) but people have little knowledge of them and therefore do not collect them. Given the low mintages (compared to coin mintages) both series would go through the roof with just the slightest upturn in collector interest.

P. S. Rod, please do not post any pics while I'm at work since I.T. has your photosite blocked. It makes for a very long night waiting for work to end so I can get home to see the pics. Here are my working hours,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Just Kidding,,,,,,, but it does make for a long night.

Gorgeous pieces!
I have some of the Swiss shooting thaler coins from the 1870's and 80's. In my opinion they are among the most attractive pieces in my collection.
