I don't usually cross-post anything, but this seemed relevant to the thread. The blackened surface has "IN THE SPOKANE FIRE" carved into it. That fire happened in August 1889 and was apparently pretty nasty.

The coin is from 1889 and only shows light wear. Furthermore, the worn areas do not have any darkening, suggesting that the darkening came before the wear did.

Here are some of my favourite Paul Kruger "hat and pipe" coins from the Boer War era. Some refer to these as trench art, but I assume the term trench art dates from WW1, and these coins predate WW1.

Some believe that these were anti-Kruger coins made by British soldiers, while others believe that these were pro-Kruger (and therefore pro-South Africa) artefacts made by the Boers, especially POWs, to represent their real memory of Kruger (with a hat and pipe). Both theories are probably true.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

I echo the last sentiment that they are very interesting pieces, however I'm just wondering whether the 2 Shillings 1897 was made sometime after the war had ended.

Was the Boer War known by that title, at the time (before the ens of the war) ?

I believe most of these were made towards the end of the war and after the war had ended. The Second Anglo-Boer war lasted from 1899 to 1902, so these coins would have been in circulation during the war. I believe the war (from the British point of view) was known as the South African War. There was also a First Boer war in the early 1880s, but when most people refer to the Boer War they mean the 2nd Anglo-Boer war.

Ok maybe the last one was pushing the vandalized part a bit. But here is a Canadian penny.
