Some of you may have noticed the crescent on the Turkish coins sometimes faces a different direction. Here is an explanation of that from my friend Renal in Turkiye. Here's also a link to his website on Turkish Republican money... https://cumhuriyetparalari.com/en/ "Crescent and star became the emblem on the flag of the Ottoman Navy in mid 1800's. Then it had an eight pointed star and naturally the flag can fly both ways. Later a five pointed star gained higher popularity and for a very long period, there was no standardized use of the direction of the crescent. First it became a part of the Ottoman Coat of Arms and especially with the 1908 revolution, it became a sort of national symbol. Medals etc. would have it either way, or even facing upwards or downwards. After the first world war, new republic adopted this an official flag but without any standardized dimensions. This is evident on the currency until 1936. As the flag was standardized in 1936, all official emblems later were made in those dimensions. In 1929, the direction of the crescent was settled facing left. As it represents a new moon (here in the Northern Hemisphere). In 1978, the crescent was flipped to the right by law. It is speculated that this was a result of left/right politics issue. So all the coins after 1980, crescent faces right on printed material, and usually official photos of the flag are also in this setup. but when it is not necessarily the flag, as on the latest 5TL, sometimes it faces up. Which is the only impossible direction of placing a proper Turkish Flag. (because the crescent faces away from the hoist, you can have it right, left or downwards)"
