I collect for the fun of the hunt, and the beauty of the coins. I was fortunate as a child in the 1970's that I ended up with a mentor, by accident. Funny thing is, his speciality as the "King of the Walking Liberty's" did not lead me down that path (yet?). However Larry's influence was such that if you ever stopped having fun it was time to stop collecting and move onto something else in life. I use those ideas in many arenas of life. This article has helped to remind me of those times.

A few thoughts.

I agree about some dealers. Non numismatic people who want to make a quick buck. Especially the Modern and Bullion, State Quarter, Mint Product "dealers". here today gone tomorrow. That said there are also many great dealers, the majority I think who were/are collectors first and have a love for numismatics. These people are our friends.
Dealer buy prices from collectors are a whole different matter, it just kills me what they offer a collector who is selling his coins. I have heard all the stories about overhead, storage, photos, descriptions have to be made and it takes time but please, I just don't see it, some buy offers are insulting.
As a hobby this is one of the more enjoyable ones, as it's fairly solitary and one can enjoy it just about anywhere.
Yes indeed the Collectors are King, the vast majority are in it because they love numismatics. Some however look at it as a money making tool also. Nothing wrong with that, investing in big buck coins knowing that they will increase in value. Some people will not get involved in anything hobby or otherwise unless there is money to be made, I'm sorry, I just don't think like that. To me a nice Circ coin can have just as much value to me as a collector as a high grade key might. Please be a collector first, that's all.
I do worry about young numismatists being far and few between nowadays. There is just no interest in the younger people today, not just coins but pretty much everything. I feel lucky that my oldest daughter has an interest in coins, she has since she was a kid, I like that !
A nice collection, no matter if it's high end stuff or Circ. coinage is a fantastic thing to leave our heirs, Hopefully they will continue in our footsteps for generations to come.

a few more thoughts, yes I also do agree, and just today as I was browsing through the coin selling sites, saw this sales pitch:
"...buy it now...in a few days this will be gone forever..."

We of course know that it will never be "gone" it will just transfer from one loving hand to another caring hand. "It" whatever that coin is, will always be there.

and the thrill is the search and hunting for "it"...because we know its out there, and finally that glorious feeling of having captured a sought after and greatly studied coin
