paralyse Bedrock of the Community United States 12057 Posts	Posted 04/30/2024 9:31 pm Just in today. George Washington Cabinet Medalet. Baker 325 D Engraved by Anthony Paquet. Dated May 1859, but sold between ~1861-1904, it was struck as a souvenir that people could purchase when visiting the Mint's "Washington Cabinet." Examples were struck in gold, silver, copper, bronze and brass. The textured finish is normal and correct for the issue. The photos make it look more "reddish" but in hand it is a typical yellowish bronze color. These and other small Washington medalets minted in the latter half of the 19th century are a great way to own affordable pieces of American presidential and numismatic history - there are dozens upon dozens of types, minted for many years, in all sorts of sizes and compositions. Hondo, it took only 15 years after the Brooklyn Bridge -- still celebrated as an engineering marvel -- was opened for New York City to consolidate and make that slogan come true, welcoming Brooklyn into the five-borough behemoth we know today. At the time Brooklyn's population made it the fourth-largest city in the country, and it would hold that same rank today were it still a free-standing autonomous city. Many historians apparently consider the completion of the bridge to be the main turning point in shaping the history of "the City," especially insofar as Queens County couldn't have been incorporated if Kings County ("Brooklyn") hadn't consented, given their geographical positioning. As a native Long Islander, I've often wondered why NYC stopped there, when Nassau, Westchester, and several other nearby counties were putatively available to be annexed.
