Colombia, to Peru ... 1724 ... in this year, Philip V of Spain abdicates in favor of his son Louis I. Sickly Louis rules for a little less than 7 months, & dies, one of the shortest reigns in European history ... coins with Louis I's name or ordinal are scarce to rare, & command a premium ... this cob bears the stylized monogram of his dad, PH V ... ...a "stylized monogram" is where the letters, in Latin, were all jammed together to make a design ... ...as a side note, the use of a king's monogram, at the New World colonial mints, was only used on the 1/2 real (cob) denomination. All other denominations (cobs) used either a shield, or the "Pillars & Waves" design, but never a monogram ...   Edited by mrwiskers

that is one nice silver coin, IndianGoldEagle ... I really admire the detail, especially the reverse, crown & globe ... ...from Brazil, to Bolivia, ...1763 ... Potosi mint, the only mint to continue cob production, in favor of the advanced screw-press method in use at the other mints... Potosi would abandon cob production 7 years later, in 1773 ... ...by this time, 1763, Potosi was knocking out these cobs as quickly as possible, with little attention to shape or strike... this example is one of their better efforts, with a strong strike & a good bit of detail ... ...I've included an early 1600s cob, same mint ... the difference in quality of production is evident. The earlier cob was struck when attention to shape & detail mattered, & the coins produced had rounder flans, with care taken to the striking of the features (an artisan doing the work, rather than some random dude smacking a rough blank between dies with a heavy hammer...)   |

thank you, Hondo...no doubt that available space was a consideration...
... With exception to special "ROYAL" presentation pieces, not made for circulation, dies for cobs were larger in diameter than the metal blanks used for the coins. &, because of the nature of hand-striking the dies, no two cobs will ever display the exact, same details. Also, because of the way the individual blanks were hand-cut & trimmed, no two cobs will ever have the identical shape.
...So...If you ever see 2 (or more) cobs that are identical, at least one of them, or, possibly both, are fake ...
