OK here are the rules:

Quote:
The Rules.

1. The coin you post must share a border with the last country posted.

2. If the last country has a coastal border you may cross the water as long as it is a straight line on the globe without passing through another country or land mass (e.g. Antarctica).

3. No returning directly back to previous country. Example. If someone plays a coin from Brazil and then a coin from Argentina is played, you may not go right back to Brazil.

4. If we get stuck on a country for 24 hours you may jump one country that borders the current country to play a coin. I hope this rule make sense.

5. After you post a coin you must wait 30 minutes before you can post another coin.

There is no mention that the 'Coin' must be a legal Tender coin - Mine are challenge COINS

Also there is no mention of them HAVING to be minted in the country you are going to either.

What about coins that have been posted in the past for a country that was in Fact actually minted in the US?
some of The Philippines and Cuban coins comes to mind here
here are some more US Minted coins for other countries:

In addition to the 2 listed above, there are - to name a few:

Netherlands East Indies
Australia
Dominican Republic
Curacao (Netherlands)
Panama
El Salvador
Liberia
(there are lots more..) Should I go on?

you can see some of these coin here in this topic:

Around the world with Coins.

Even medals should be excluded, but I know a few have slipped by.

It is kind of a grey line, but a challenge coin is a bit too far over it, IMHO.

I never said no, I just questioned it and was happy we went to Canada because even if we allowed it, you can still get to Canada from Japan.

So let us just move along now.

This is a game, not an entrance exam to Numismatic Academy. I think it should be fun to play for all participants. I wouldn't worry too much about technicalities.

Although minted in US, they were used in the country named on the coin. There are many coins minted by various entities for use in other countries - UK and France particularly come to mind. And there are also the NCLTs minted by Franklin Mint or Scottsdale Mint primarily for the collector's market.
Let's not overthink this and stick to coins and tokens used as coins and the countries where they were used.

Sounds like a fair rule. I will add that up top to help us going forward.
