Here are some of the counterstamps that I had posted prior to me starting this thread. Sorry for any repetition.

I wonder when that one was actually stamped. Is there sort of pattern you've seen, say for coins of the past 50 years, that suggests that stamping was done primarily on contemporary new cents?

That's a great question. I think the majority are stamped on new coins. I`ve noticed a influx of Masonic stamps where it's obviously a modern stamp on an old coin. You kind of get a feel too for the stamp-date relationship. Most that commemorate a historic event (John F. Kennedy, Apollo launches, Bicentennial) were done at the time of the event. I believe that contemporary coins would have been used for them. Many of the others, more random stamps, I think were mostly done on new coins at the time but I've seen such an influx of different dates for the same stamp there's really no way of knowing. Unless someone was stamping for a decade which is unlikely. The Support Ecology counterstamp that you are asking about I only own one of and it's dated 1971. I've ran across two others on the internet. one was dated 1971 as well, the other 1972, so I think that one is date appropriate. I have only one stamp that I do myself and I have a rule that I only use contemporary uncirculated Lincoln Cents.
