Mr. Finger, I am a Geo-archeology Major, that being said, I am not yet a graduate so my opinion is just that. It does appear to be carved, and from what I can see, there are shadowed areas that appear to be worn figures. These could just be fossilized remains that are coincidentally in this shape, or this could be something in the nature of a lithograph. This is definitely something that should be investigated by someone who is an expert. I traced the areas of interest, let me know if they look more like carvings after you look at this trace.  |

Wow, how interesting! I did not see those possible figures at first, but initally the overall patterns did not appear organic or random. Then again, I'm no expert  . It would be interesting to see closeups of those areas with low-angled lighting to bring out details. Even on older artifacts, tool marks are sometimes visible, and the shape of the marks might determine the tool used--and possible age. |

after looking closely at the stone,I can see the shapes that you traced out,but,Im not so sure that theyre carvings,they look more like just raised areas on the stone (unfortunately).... But,then again,I dont think id know an old stone carving if it dropped on my head! The thing that makes me think its been carved out is the square shape and the way the one corner looks like it was cut out...as for the raised area on top,I dont know what the heck that would be..anyway heres a few more pics..    |

Well you have to love photography. I was picturing this stone to be much larger. What I thought to be carvings are in fact just random fractures. Some types of stone fracture at square angles so it is difficult to tell if they are shaped or just fractured and worn. I believe yours is just fractured and worn. If it were found in an area where there were many of them, then it may be possible that they were using them as a type of masonry.

I figured that you might have thought it was bigger than it was,and thats why I put up these last few pics....Photography is tricky,I should have put a quarter next to it for scale... When I first saw the stone,My first thought was that it looked like something that would have been used as floor tile.....at least its a good conversation piece! Thanks for the interest all....you guys are the best!  Im gonna go outside now and find some more rocks with my metal detector...lol |

I still think that shape in relief looks interesting, carved or not. Photos can be funny...we tend to project into them. Does anyone remember the "face" on Mars?

I still think the face on Mars was real.  If I remember correctly when they figured out the scale on it, it would have been several hundred feet long. That is one big carved face. |

Its alot easier to tell of things in person. Kurt is right pictures are tricky sometimes. I personally dont think its an artifact I just think its a very unusual shaped rock. Keep though and if youre still curious have it looked by a professional.
