France, double tournois (2 deniers), Henry III, 1575-77, Paris (A) This little coin is remarkable in two ways. Firstly, it is (together with a 1 denier coin) the first French coin minted in pure copper, finally replacing the lowest denomination billon coins with their ever decreasing silver content. Secondly, it is the first French coin with inscription in French instead of Latin - the HENRI III R DE FRAN ET POL is read Henri III Roi de France et Pologne. During the first few years, 1575-77, the coins have no date. It has lost a little of its luster over the 440+ years since it was minted. Still in pretty good shape for its age, though, I think.
