Quote: I want it, I don't care about the grade. @paralyse took the words out of my mouth. I pondered the grade for a day, but I knew this coin was out of my league. @Jon Brand - congratulations on such an exquisite example. That is something I would hang a photo of on my wall.

Wow... you really want that coin to be MS. Sorry, but there is just too much wear in the hair to be a MS coin.
I glanced through the PhotoGrade book last night to establish my estimates.
If you average my best grade of the obverse (AU-50) with my grade of the reverse (AU-55) ... you get AU-52.5 ... which would round to AU-53. However, I have no idea if that is how a grade is established.
It's wonderful coin you have there. I would not have hesitated buying it as graded.

I agree with the AU53 grade. The gold sticker is about market value and market grading which clearly puts the price of this piece well above AU+.

May I ask what you paid for it? Just trying to get a sense of what kind of premium was paid for this kind of off the charts eye appeal. Guessing it wasn't greysheet. Congrats on your new addition to your collection!

Jmwilson... I don't want this coin to be Ms. But I do think it has a shot at 58+. That said I'm happy with it as is and not pushing anything. I think it's definitely at least a 55, and not just cause the sticker. It has very nice luster but obviously some is lost in the center keeping it down at AU.
Numismaticstudent... I am not gonna reveal the cost here but there was certainly a premium.
Thanks all for participating, I thought this was a fun one!

I was browsing through Instagram and I came across the account that sold this coin (They posted it on their account). You got it for a very nice price! It sure is a beauty!

Yeah. I saw the list price that the dealer had it at. Looks like the list price was about 5x what a normal au55 O-108 sells for. Don't know if OP paid full list but that is a heady multiple for eye appeal. Enjoy the coin - she's a beaut.

This is a great example of a coin where eye appeal is much more important to the value than technical grade/sharpness.
If most of us here are CCF are goo-goo-gah-gah about this coin, that bodes well for OP if he ever decides to sell it!

Haha, coinfrog.
Thats why this was an interesting one to post. There is no right or wrong answer. The guy I got it from would love to see me upgrade it but in a way its cool to have this undergraded holder with the sticker. Id rather that, then everyone telling me its over graded! Glad you guys like it. That certainly helps me validate the desire I had for this piece when I saw it even though I buy what I like regardless.

Spectacular coin for AU-53. I think you made the right decision on keeping it in the 53 holder with gold CAC.

SilverDollar- I havent decided yet but eventually I have a feeling ill try and up the grade. I am in no rush and can enjoy looking at it just as well. The gold cac didnt influence the decision much on my end, except for the face that I agreed from pics. I love the coin but I find The sticker a bit sexy on a slab with such an intense coin. To each their own though and I am open to all opinions.

I love how you edited (removed) your comment about me being right ... "in a weird sort of way" ... and, then replied to my comment that you didn't want it to be MS.
I suppose I need to use the Quote function.

jmwilson, to be honest I don't remember doing that and am not sure what you are talking about. I edit posts alot as I often post on the run and realize my mistakes later. That said I dont believe I commented about you being right, but about everyone being right as there is really no bad guesses on this one. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make?
I never wanted this coin to be ms as I don't believe it is but some might see the luster and attribute it as MS. If you want to PM me feel free as I am a little confused. Perhaps I had a drink and forgot something I edited?
