I got these earlier today at my local coin shop and I was so excited to buy them that I didn't even try to talk him down in price. All together I paid $380 and I have not been so happy to spend almost $400 in a while.

...Not all will necessarily like this cob, but it's crude, double (shield side) - triple (cross side) striking is what makes it a challenge to identify & date these "coins" ... & I enjoy that challenge ...

...I originally bought this because of the transposed lions & castles in the shield ... this is a 'minting error' ... (hard to make out -- flat & smudgy striking... see 2nd pic) ...

...upon receiving, I could determine that the last two date digits were present (1 - 7), for the year 1617... The 1st 2 digits (1 - 6) were obliterated by the over-strike, with the bottom half of the "1" + a full "7" visible in the correct position, cross side (see 3rd pic) ...I had this confirmed by Dan Sedwick, who also gave me an update on the mint's assayer's identification ...

...As it turns out, this cob was struck in 1617, the first year that dates appeared on cobs, at Potosi, under the direction of assayer Juan Sánchez Mexía (previously unidentified), the same assayer for the silver bars recovered on the Atocha wreck ...

...Mexia's initial was obliterated on this cob, as the double-striking of the shield nixed it out, but he is the only assayer listed for 1617 ...his cobs are scarce, & being the first year of dated (Potosi) cobs, along with transposed fields, makes this a great find (for $60 delivered)...

...Ya'll still awake?...lol...
