@keith, beautiful szostak! That coin is the earliest affordable example of that large (for the time) denomination (a few dates in the 1530s exist, but are quite rare). I have a 1599 with a similar design. Poland remains a "happy hunting ground" for nice 16th century coins. I hope you'll also find some nice groats from the 1530s, and 3 groschen coins from Sigismund III's reign (and of course half groats too!) Welcome to the dark side Edited by tdziemia

@keith, I also just noticed that Bohemia coin. That's really a super design and stellar example for a coin of that era  Yeah, you've definitely got the bug. I am curious how you are proceeding ... Are you going for breadth of issuing entities? Or some other approach. I'll keep us on medieval for one more post at least with this recent pickup, a 1476 double briquet of the Duchy of Brabant. Obverse is a little weak (that's crouching lions facing each other, but reverse (and date) are better. I've managed to fill out all the existing dates in 1470s for the Low Countries (1474-79) this year. The 1474 will probably remain my earliest dated coin.   |

Beware that particular bug, it's addicting and can be expensive, but it's also very, very satisfying when you scratch that itch! Here's a much more recent, and much smaller, coin, but the photos speak for themselves quite well. From one end of the grade spectrum to the other end? 1816 IB - Poland (Russia) - 2 Zlote (CCF does not support slashed L!) Now has the "distinction" of being my most worn Polish coin! Don't know if I would say that. I do like to buy my coins slabbed. I probably wasn't clear on my meaning. 1596 was the first year of that 6 groschen coin under Sigismund III. For those who don't know it, it's nearly half dollar size,making it the largest Polish "minor" coin up to that point (15 years later the 1/4 thaler coin appears). Since Polish thalers of that era are well into the thousands, I just meant this type is more affordable, but they are certainly not cheap. My 1599 is raw, close to yours in condition, and set back about $240 |
