I seem to be developing a habit, that whenever I am in a new town I will be looking for a shop that sells coins and/or other collectibles.
So, luck would have it that I was in Turkey on Holidays last week with the final four days relaxing in Antalya. I can highly recommend it!
Browsing the internet, I found a coin shop near the old town that sold classic Turkish coins and commemoratives. My eye fell on a commemorative from the composer Ahmet Adnan Saygun. Never heard of him before, but since I am considering starting a collection of coins with composers I thought it would be a fun souvenir to take home.
Well, easier said then done. The area where the coin shop should be was somewhat of a maze, and I was basically going in circles going in and out of buildings to find this elusive coin shop. Almost giving up, I finally asked a group of men who were playing some board game and smoking cigarettes where this coin shop might be. After using lots of hand gestures (as these men didn't really speak English and my Turkish is non-existent) I was pointed in the right direction.
Turns out, this coins shop is TINY and easily overlooked. An elderly chap was sitting in front of his shop with a small table with...coins! YES!
So, I sat down and started chatting while drinking Turkish tea. Good thing was the owner spoke reasonably well English. I mentioned I was interested in the Saygun commemorative and he said he would look for it. Turns out, he didn't have it in his shop. But, in the typically friendly Turkish manner I had become accustomed to, it was no problem for him to drive home, get the coin, drive back, and sell it to me. Which he did.
