A variety of hats and headgear on display on this 2005 $5 silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM) - patients, family members and physicians are all depicted wearing some form of headgear! The coin was issued in 2006 to help raise awareness about breast cancer.

Quite possibly the most iconic hat among all those depicted on the coins of the classic US commemorative series, is the capotain shown being worn by William Bradford on the obverse of the 1920-21 Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar. The tall, somewhat conically-shaped, narrow-brimmed hat is so indelibly linked to the Pilgrims of 1620, that the sight of the hat instantly conjures up images of the earliest days of America's colonial era in anyone who has learned/been taught about early US history. The coin was issued to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims in present-day Massachusetts.

It appears that Bradford's hat includes the oft-seen buckle at its front. For the record, while the Pilgrims did, in fact, wear capotains, the hats they wore were not likely adorned with the relatively expensive ornamental buckle that is frequently seen on them. Today, most historians believe that the buckle was added to images of the hat in the 19th century, well after the capotain had stopped being popular in England and America.

The coin was designed by Cyrus Edwin Dallin (1861-1944); it bears an incuse "D" below Bradford's left elbow (the initial is not a mint mark for the Denver Branch Mint - the coins were all struck at Philadelphia).

The obverse of the 1925 Norse-American Centennial commemorative medal, collected alongside the classic era US commemorative coins by many collectors, features a formidable looking viking who has come ashore wearing his armor and an iron helmet with two horns.

Though a very popular image today, historical evidence calls into question whether horned helmets were actually worn by vikings during battle vs. just during ceremonial events and non-battle situations. For example, in hand-to-hand combat, it is easy to imagine the horns on a helmet becoming a target for an opponent and, once hit, causing the wearer's head to turn or twist causing his body to lurch and thus put him in a more vulnerable position for further attack. The helmet would not be an advantage!

The medal was struck in two varieties of silver, one gold and one bronze (later silver plated).

Funny how that makes sense once you think about it. Thank you for sharing the medal and information.
