The reverse of the Daniel Boone Birth Bicentennial commemorative half dollar (struck from 1934 to 1938) depicts the standing figures of Daniel Boone and Chief Blackfish of the Shawnee. The obverse has a left-facing portrait of Daniel Boone. The designs for the coin were prepared by Agustus Lukeman. Each figure on the reverse is shown wearing headgear: Boone wears a coonskin hat (a cap made from the skin/fur of a raccoon), and Chief Blackfish wears a simple feather headdress with two feathers visible. Interestingly, per Daniel Boone's son, "My father, Daniel Boone, always despised the raccoon fur caps and did not wear one himself, as he always had a hat." (From a 1904 interview with Nathan Boone, as presented on the web site of The Boone Society: https://www.boonesociety.org/daniel...onskin-cap.)The web site continues, "Although the stereotype exists in some characterizations even to this day; Daniel Boone did not wear a coonskin cap! Like many other long-hunters of his day, Daniel wore a wide-brimmed felt or beaver hat, much like the Quaker style hats worn by men in Pennsylvania where he was born and spent his early years." (Gene Ray, The Boone Society, https://www.boonesociety.org/daniel...onskin-cap.)A bit of artistic license by Lukeman? 1934 Boone Birth Bicentennial Half Dollar For more of my posts about the Boone half dollar, see: Commems Collection.
