mrwiskers, I think that the Bisj pole on this 1966 New Hebrides 100 Francs has a hat already - wanted to be like Marianne.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Nice examples! I don't think we have had an electoral hat here yet. It was worn by the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire, the seven high ranking nobles whose task it was to elect a new emperor when the former one had passed away. An important status symbol, so it often shows up on coins minted by the electors. Here is a liard from Liège, minted by its bishop Johann Theodor of Bavaria in 1750. The hat crowns the coat of arms on the obverse and a smaller version sits on top of the small shield of Liège, in the center of the reverse. (Actually, Johann wasn't Elector himself, that was a role that had been assigned to his brother Clemens. But he wasn't picky about details.  )  |
