as for the Buffalo they were paper coin army scrip not coins
Interesting!

Is there any possibility he was calling these five cent paper notes rectangular nickels with the Buffalo design on them and did not actually mean a five cent coin?
Rest in Peace

Military Payment Certificates! Good thinking. Now that makes sense. I'll look thru my MPC book at home tonight to see if the 5 cent note had a buffalo on it.

I searched online for "Military Payment Certificates" and found many Five Cent examples, but no buffalo variety. The only buffalo I found was on a One Dollar.

Hopefully you will have better success with the book!

Nope--not a veteran of the service, but I've heard of "trench art", and sometimes that includes coins.

I looked thru the Fred Schwan's MPC book. No Luck. Just like Jbuck said, there was only one note with a buffalo and it was a $1 note issued in 1970. Also MPC was first issued in 1946. What year around WWII are we talking about here?
