I searched online for "Military Payment Certificates" and found many Five Cent examples, but no buffalo variety. The only buffalo I found was on a One Dollar. Hopefully you will have better success with the book! Just like Jbuck said, there was only one note with a buffalo and it was a $1 note issued in 1970. Also MPC was first issued in 1946. What year around WWII are we talking about here?
