Here's a 1794 halfpenny token from my home town of Hythe in Kent, England:

The coat-of-arms is that of the Cinque Ports, a federation of (originally) five coastal towns in medieval England. To show that these were the country's major ports, the three lions of the English Royal Standard had their rear halves replaced by the prows of ships:

The original Cinque (Norman French for 'Five') ports were Dover, Sandwich, Hythe, New Romney and Hastings. Two more towns joined the federation in the 14th century - Rye and Winchelsea in Sussex.

By the 17th century the role of the Cinque Ports was declining. Colonial expansion and trade with countries outside Europe meant that cities like Portsmouth and Bristol were taking away much of their trade. Additionally, the harbours at Hythe and New Romney were choked with shingle, the sea retreated from Winchelsea altogether leaving it two miles inland, and the larger, newer ships could not negotiate the narrow creeks leading to Rye and Sandwich. Hastings still has a fair-sixed fishing fleet, but only Dover is still a major port today.
