Great Groat, Dearborn!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Lovely groat, Dearborn. Showing my hammered-era ignorance here, but Is the cross & pellets motif a coat of arms?

Thanks Dalt and jbuck. Quote: but Is the cross & pellets motif a coat of arms You know, I never really looked that up, but had thought it was a very early design of the CoA (coat of Arms). After finally looking it up it would NOT be considered a CoA, but rather a means of attempting to preventing the 'clipping' of a coins edge to recover some of the metal. The act of adding a CoA started in around 1200 and features 3 lions.
