November 11, 2004. Myself and 3 friends took it upon ourselves to raise some money for a very good cause. Corporal Frederick George Topham's WWII medals came up for sale, VC included. A fundraiser was under way to keep the medals in Canada, even though there was a higher bid on them from Britain. $275,000 was needed. Between the four of us, we agreed to match, dollar for dollar, all the funds we could collect in the Naval hall we were at, for a period of 10 minutes. Seeking no glamour, we were known as Mr. White, Green, Black and Brown. An announcement was made. We went around to the tables. You should have seen the cash filling our wedges. The generosity was amazing knowing how the donation was going to be matched. I got many thank you's and slaps on the back. 20 minutes later we presented over $3000.00 to the Legion President. The place erupted. One of my prouder moments. A bunch of friends just put together more than 1% of the fundraisers goal, in my little community, on a whim, in just minutes. Boy, did we cut it loose after that. Yup, pretty damb proud of us helping keep those medals at home.   "We are poor little lambs...who have lost our way...Baa...Baa...Baa"
