The reverse of the 1921 Missouri Statehood Centennial half dollar presents a scene in which Daniel Boone is standing with a Native American Chief with his hand upraised and pointing to the west. The 24 stars flanking the two figures are symbolic of Missouri being the 24th State to be admitted to the Union; it was admitted on August 10, 1821. A left-facing portrait of Daniel Boone is seen on the coin's obverse.

The coin's designs were the work of Robert Aitken. Aitken had previously designed the $50 gold coins of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and would go on to design the 1935-36 half dollar for the California-Pacific International Exposition.

The 1936 Columbia, SC Sesquicentennial half dollar was issued to commemorate "the sesquicentennial anniversary of the founding of the capital of South Carolina at Columbia, South Carolina." (From Public Law 74-476, the legislation that authorized the coin.)

On its obverse, Lady Justice, is depicted holding a balance scale in her upraised left hand while holding a sword, pointed downward, in her right hand; surprisingly, she is not blindfolded. Justice is derived most directly from the Roman goddess Justitia, but also has roots in the Greek goddesses Dike and Themis. The pans of the scale are level, indicating fair and equitable treatment for all under the law. The sword is symbolic of the enforceability of the law; it is a double-sided sword which indicates that it will defend and protect either party in a dispute. It is also shown positioned below the scales, which is meant to indicate that the law is enforced after the evidence is weighed and not before. Justice's hands are certainly full!

In 1928, the US issued a half dollar to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the European discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. British Captain James Cook came upon them in 1778.

On its reverse, the coin features an unidentified Hawaiian warrior chief in full regalia. He is depicted with his arm raised and extended and his hand open with palm up as a sign of welcome. A portrait of Captain Cook is presented on the coin's obverse.

The design for the coin was the work of Juliette May Fraser; the models for the coin were prepared by Chester Beach.
