I'll take a stab at it: 1) The piece shown is a medal not a coin. It was included in the issues of the National Commemorative Society - a series of sterling silver medals put out by The Franklin Mint. 2) The ship on the medal appears to be a US Heavy Cruiser, Northampton class. The USS Augusta, a ship of the Nothampton class, saw service in the US Atlantic and US Asiatic Fleets prior to WWII. Nimitz commanded the USS Augusta for a time while it was in the Pacific. The medal could be representing Nimitz' time as the ship's commander. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved. Report this Post to the Staff
