Glad to hear your friend's OK! My screen name is my cat's name, and I don't know what I'd do without her. She's been sick and she's stuck at the vet's for a few days and I'm going nuts! Everyone think good thoughts for Kyra, OK? Rachel [:p]

Hi Rachael, Sorry to hear about your cat, Kyra. As we're a small, friendly group what's wrong with her that she needs to stay at the vets? Hope it isn't too serious. Don

Rick I hold cats and dogs(I have seven total)in equal esteem. It's just that the cats refuse to accept that! Mike...Kyra's Mommie, I hope all goes well with her. Let us know how its going.

Thanks for all your concern, everyone! I appreciate it! Kyra has a bacterial infection called Bartonellosis. It's caused by flea bites- and even if your cat had fleas years ago- like Kyra did- this bacteria can lie dormant in their systems for years. Kyra's 7 years old, and she last had fleas as a kitten. She stopped eating, so she's at the vet's being tube fed. I got to see how they do it- doesn't look pleasant at all... This bacteria also can damage the liver, so they have to keep a close eye on that. So- if any of your cats have ever had fleas and suddenly lose their appetite, get them to the doctor ASAP! Rachel [:p]

I'm so sorry to hear that. Fortunately, she's still young. Did the vet give you an idea how long it would be before she recovers?

Hi Rachel, Hope Kyra is continuing to recover. How did your Vet decide that bartonella is responsible? Don

Kyra is home today- at least for the weekend. I may have to take her back to the vet on Monday, but at least I have her for a few days. The vet did a blood test for Bartonella- apparently it's really common around here. The scale of infection runs from a -1 (none) to +4 (worst), and poor Kyra is a +3. When I was in picking up Kyra today another lady was there with her cat who had the same thing. The vet seems to think she's starting to come out of it, but she needs to start eating regularly first. Thanks again for the good wishes! Rachel [:p]

Hi Rachel, Glad Kyra is home. Add bacteriology to the list of topics I've learned a bit about due to this forum.

I'm so glad that Kyra is home (at least for a while). I hope she is able to eat on her own soon. At least she has a mother who loves her enough to take the time to take good care of her.
