Quote: dmasters01 & coretj- Very funny stories! But how would the person in each of your stories have reacted to, say, an 18th-century Russian coin or an Ancient Roman coin? There would be no way to pay face for them. I think my brother-in-law wouldn't care much about foreign currency. However if I told him "This coin is over 2300 years old" I think he would think it is worth tens of thousands of dollars.. when in fact it is worth much less.. http://cgi.ebay.com/Alexander-the-G...BC_W0QQitemZ270524974201QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3efc8b8479#ht_500wt_1182 I think a lot of people put a premium on a coin's age before thinking about all of the other factors that go into a numismatic value.

It is quite curious that in the minds of many non-collectors that a coin is either all or nothing. In fact, I once remember seeing a customer in a shop keep insisting that his beaten up 1922 Peace dollar "must be worth, like, $80,000!" haha

My ex wife would have no clue about any part of it. Sadly, I must admit I wouldn't have either until a few years ago when someone took me under their wing and said, "Hey, wanna know something..." I have been hooked ever since.

Great topic! My addition... "What's this?" the Dunkin Donuts drive thru cashier asked. "A half dollar" I replied. "Hang on..." she says as she waves the manager over. "Can we take this?" He looks it over for a moment ..."Nope, it's not American money." I just shook my head sadly and paid with a dollar bill.....

I was showing a coin I purchased to a friend and he ask "what did you pay for that?" I replied "$17.00" He replied back "I can buy smokes & a 12 pack for that" I replied " in two days when the smokes and beer are gone, what will you have?
I don't smoke but have a cigarett collection. Had it for a long time now. A freind gave me a can of beer from some place in Germany he visited. That was 20 years ago and it's still in the refrigerator. SEE, so not always true. HOWEVER, try to sell a cigarett collection.

Well, everyone, I just got back from the Bank, where I got a few rolls of dollar coins. I asked if the teller had any Native American dollars and he responded "no I am all out of Saskatchewan dollars." hahaha

Haha! I love this thread!
I was at Bible study last week and brought all four 2009 Lincoln cents to show off. I said to some people, including my pastor, who were sitting at my table, "Have you guys seen the 2009 pennies yet?" They were like, "Uh, yeah, what?" I showed the cents to them, and they said, "Whoa! I haven't SEEN those before! COOL!"

I had some duplicate S.B.A. dollars to get rid of so put them in my pocket. Stopped on the way home from work to pick up a 12 pack. The total was 8.75.Gave her a five, three SBA's and 3 quarters. She looked at me and said"I still need 2.25.After explaining to her that they were dollars she said"Oh,I guess they are but we don't take Canadian money."Haha

I got 40 Ikes from a teller the other day.. after looking through them I had 35 to get rid of. I went to go get some gas. The 20 something clerk told me they don't take euros.. .. I asked him if euros would say United States of America on them? He said they they must be fake coins... At this point an older man (in his late 50's I think) came in from the service bay. I figured he was the Mechanic for the gas station. The kid behind the counter told him I was trying to pay with fake coins.. I said " They are dollar coins, not fake" He said "I don't care what they are worth".. The old man came closer... He smacked the kid on the back of the head and told him to go empty out the garbage cans.. I was a little taken a back by that until he said. "Please forgive my nephew, he's an idiot." Turns out the old guy was the owner of the gas station and was the mechanic. He had to hire his nephew as a favor to his brother.

coretj- Well, at least the guy had heard of Euros. I just wonder why he assumed that that is what they were. In some ways I'm surprised that so many readily accept Canadian coins rather than the much stronger Euro coinage mixed in with that of the US.

I have lots of Canadian quarters. Our machines and coin counters won't take them but you can sneak them in at other places with no problems a couple at a time.

Seriously, if I had a business and you wanted to give me E30 for a $30 gas bill I would take it. Even if I have to pay 10% money transfer costs I am still ahead almost $10.

overheard in a wet market: a woman buying 1.75 worth of tomatos, hands over a 20 bill and gets change all in quarters... exclaims "that's not money, give me cash!" to which the seller replies... "get your cash from a bank..."
