Post An Ike (Eisenhower Dollar)

Got my Ike. Also got a 2003 silver proof set. Here they are sitting on top of my current research.

I picked up these bad boys at the bank on Saturday.

There they were just sitting in the coin tray. When I told the teller I'd like to take them she asked if I'd like some $2 bills as well.

I really like a teller that knows her customers.

My last $1000 bag of Ikes had a large quantity of 1976-D's in really great shape. I finally decided to go through them tonight and I came across quite a few that caught my attention. I was able to find almost 40 of these with the mark near the upper lip so far. It looks like some sort of Machine Doubling. I have heard that Machine Doubling is very common in Ikes.

I have another 8 rolls to go through and I was wondering if these are worth saving? Or should I just include them with the others that are going back to the bank? Considering I have found almost 40 of them in 10 rolls, I'm assuming they are common. But I would like some advice from some of the experts here. Thanks in advance for looking.

MY TURN!! After 2 years, I have completed my collection of Ikes. This collection was lovingly assembled one coin at a time, with all coins except '71-'72 coming from various mint sets. All coins removed from mint sets were handled with gloves and were not touched. 32 beautiful cartwheels...WOOHOO!

Murphy...Shelf Doubling, or, Mechanical Doubling(or whatever type of non-notched doubling is called) is common on IKES, from what I read, due to the nature of coining such a large coin, especially the 1971's, they always seem to have the most minting damage and errors..here's one of 6 1971-S Business Strike IKES I found in Blue Packs...Rob E., of the Ikegroup.org states(I mailed him 1 for perusal) this was THE heaviest MDD on a BS IKE he had seen to date, and, may even be pictured in one of the upcoming books by that group...the "halo" finish around IKES head(I suppose from the tremendous pressures involved with many a TON of weight slamming down on the dies, with a loose chamber), is spectacular in hand...double profile IKES are a bit uncommon, IMHO, where IKES head, nose, lips, chin, etc, is heavily doubled..worth a small premium to some collectors I would venture.

Thank you everyone! Collecting the Ikes was fun. I now have a good start on collections of other coins that were in the sets.




Be prepared to spend! I could have just bought a complete set on ebay I suppose, but it would not have been nearly as satisfying as assembling my own collection. I'm very happy with it.

Y'all have made me want to start collecting Ikes! I picked up a bicentennial proof recently on ebay. Not anything special, but I think it's a pretty cool coin.
