Quote:This was an ebay snag, a coin I bought from from bad pictures (on it's second listing) for the opening bid of 299.00. I am absolutely certain that this coin would slab. I think it'd go 58....maybe higher. You sound like ebay paid blogger. The claim quoted above is, "This is a $1500 coin...maybe higher that I paid $299 for on it's second listing". Acid dipped, stripped of all original patina and lightly re-toned is what it is. As are many of these coins on ebay. I don't care if you've been collecting for 1,000 years and are God himself. You are doing, and have done, much damage to many young numismatists by your flippant and braggadocio posts. If you've been collecting for 40 years then act like an adult, not a child who has to boast about every purchase.

Pardon my enthusiasm that you mistake for braggadacio. If you don't like it, don't read, and certainly....don't post. I believe that this sort of discussion is educational and beneficial to all, but I will not allow somebody who claims to be protecting young collectors by "saving them from ebay"...intentionally run down a piece to ridiculous levels. I won't say this coin's not been dipped. I never did say that. I concede that it probably has. But 53-55 details...nope. How about we teach the young collectors what to look for in terms of grade...and spend less time degrading and berating others? Chance

As a collector of Bust halves here and there and an avid reader of BHD materials I will call the coin at least an AU-58 IMO. The coins has seemingly good luster and the weak strike in the bust area is consistant with the weat ST in States. I would really like to see the final grade on this coin when you get it back from DGS.

I have it packed up and ready to travel, but need to talk to them about "when" they accept PayPal as payment. It doesn't say anything about that on their website. I am thinking that it's after the service, since they charge you for conservation....unless the coin doesn't require that service...so maybe they email you to instruct you as to payment procedure. For me...I think that might be a good thing for them to detail on their site.

I called and talked to Thomas at DGS this morning, and payment is rendered when you are sending the coin. I paid them this morning, and the coin will be enroute in the next hour or so. I'll be able to provide a link to their photos, via their "authenti-view" service when they've completed the process, so all that remains is to wait and see.

Dominion rec'd the coin on the 26th for expedited service, and it's status is "grading". They say that in a small percentage of cases, the coin may be shown to sources outside DGS, and this may be one of those cases....I don't know. I'll post the link when it's been added to authenti-view, regardless of the outcome. I was cleaning up my server and found a picture of this coin that I'd taken under intense lighting, that shows the die polishing (lapping) lines very plainly. The marks in the field to the left of Liberty...are raised...they are not scratched into the surface of the coin. I wanted to share this picture, and I know that the easy conclusion is "those are scratches"...but those are die polishing or lapping marks, under unbroken luster. Try to remember before "ripping me a new one"...that we are working within the constraints of a 99 dollar camera here. I took this picture right after getting this coin, and I believe my photography skills have improved somewhat, but better equipment would be a good idea at this point. Chance

They're killin' me. It hasn't been graded yet, but has been in the system slated for "expedited" service since the morning of the 26th. I am thinking that they are going to consult some outside experts for this one. It says on their website that they do that sometimes...so...we wait. I think the deliberation is a good sign as opposed to a bad sign, but can't even say that for sure.

The DGS verdict is in....what do you think? Frankly...I think they're off their nut. Oh, the pictures aren't posted yet, but you can click on the following link, and enter this serial number (012628001) in the lookup ID box. http://www.dominiongrading.com/popt...&category1=1Chance

I would actually agree with their grade. AU55- polished. I honestly could not tell polishing from trypical cleaning in this coin, but due to the lack of hairlines I could see it being polished. I do see the wear on the obverse in a few places. My original thoughts were au 53-55 cleaned and apparently DGS was along the same lines.

I thought it was AU and dipped, but polished? I didn't see that coming

Nobody saw that coming...unless they also are misinterpreting the die lapping marks in the obverse field as damage from cleaning. The obverse die used to strike this coin had been repaired, having a die clash removed from the area of Liberty's throat. That's why there's a bulge there, and why the die was relapped. That also explains the incomplete strike. If you increase the volume of the negative area of a die, which is what would be happening when you make such repairs...unless the pressure is increased, the devices will not fill completely. As to incomplete drapery lines...here's an excercise. Tell me what NGC graded this coin at. Note the strike similarity...incomplete drapery line, and incomplete stars on the lower right. I didn't save the reverse image, but the ribbon and "ST" in states display the exact weakness as my specimen. You guess NGC's grade....and I'll reveal it later. Chance
