If it is then they may or may not have any restrictions, probably not. It may be wise to check. If it is State or Nationally funded and maintained than no, that's not wise. I love to metal detect folks. I enjoy it. I just have to be careful where and not to tread on private lands without approval and not on public domains without checking. I'm not accusing anyone and I certainly don't wish for any of you to think that. I'm only suggesting a word of caution. There are currently National Parks that are being threatened to be decommissioned due to so many people thinking it ok to pick up rocks (Petrified National Forest for one) and even a loose Civil War bullet in National Battlefields. dsking Pillar of the Community United States 2365 Posts	Posted 06/27/2006 09:22 am Hi again laxmaster: The area that you describe sounds like a local recreation area and could be owned by the City, County or perhaps a private entity. It would probably be ok to detect there and it wouldn't be considered "protected" such as historical sites are. If you are concerned or don't know perhaps you could find out by doing an internet search within that City and so forth for that "Park"/"recreational area" to see if they have any restrictions. Again, I doubt it. You may also want to search for perhaps a metal detecting group that might exist in your area. Internet search? Yellow pages? I'll give an example of a State restriction here in Arizona. If you find pottery or artifacts or bone fragments on your own private property that date back to the Yavapai Indians - you are to leave them alone and report it to the State. Many Indian "finds" Nationwide are protected tribal sites. These are not "coins" true, but just a very small example of things that can turn out wrong should you find and not report such a "find". I know that many are unreported though. Again, not coins but, don't ever pick up an eagle feather! Somewhere around Calgary might produce some very fine coins for you. My former Father-in-law taught Canadian Government for over 30 years and oh, how I wish he were still living so that I could ask him this question. Perhaps the Canadian Mounties have a web site where you could atleast request information or suggestions from them. Your post brought back beautiful memories of the flax fields and ofcourse wonderful Banff. Please let the forum know what you find out as I'm curious too. Report this Post to the Staff
