Well, I (a female coin-collector) was introduced to the wonders of coin collecting by my mother (a long-time collector) and by my son (a very young collector) and I have now been addicted for several years.

I have, on occasion, been dismissed while in one particular coin store. I got the impression that they didn't expect to be selling anything worthwhile to a young woman who was accompanied only by her small son.

However, my regular coin store is fabulous. The dealer always keeps aside coins that I (or my son) may be interested in, and he is very patient. He also loves to chat stamps with my son whenever we are there if he has free time.

It can make a HUGE difference to a prospective collector when they find a dealer who is not only patient and helpful, but also actively encourages the newbie.

Rest in Peace

Ugly:

I don't know if its actually due to hardwiring (at least to the full extent). There is something called 'brain plasticity' in which the brain changes throughout development as the environment is altered, and I'd say men are raised to be a lot like you said they tend to be. I agree though that that tends to be a 'male' archetype. I don't think I fulfill that archetype very well though. I'm an extreme multi-tasker, which I guess makes finishing a specific collection difficult to do. Instead, I end up buying mountains of coins (I have quite a bit of spare cash) of many different US types. Though, I am finally getting close to completing my type set.

Every time this subject comes up it makes me look around at the next coin show. Since I go to from 2 to 4 coin shows a Month, I look around most of the time for the types of people there. Naturally the last one was on Mother's Day so possibly not a good representative type show. This show usually has about 80 to 100 dealers but this one had about 40 to 50 dealers. Usually all set up by 9AM but this one had dealers still seting up at 10AM. I was there from about 9 to 11AM. One female dealer but with her husband. Only one female customer all morning. Of course being Mother's Day may have made a little difference. I'll probably look around this weekend at the next show but I doubt any increase in female customers.
Just not what most girls or women are interested in.
