Wow! Still a great find. I have just one question...how is it that someone received this set at birth in 1957, but the set includes a 1958 quarter, and 1964 nickel and half? lol

Later on, they replaced the coins with something from their pocket change. Honestly, wouldn't it make sense that there was originally a Franklin half in an assortment like this? I'm not that old (I like to think), and I remember running into Franklins when I was a kid all the time. We are just lucky that that 1909-s has little face value.

The mint mark looks good to me. THe coin is authentic and a very nice grade, too bad about the scratches. Trade you for my 1877 IHC. Check it out I have 2 and I will be selling one. THe 1909 S will finish my Indian Heads.

soccerdad,
thanks man but I really gotta hold off on even thinking about this stuff until I get through these coins.
I'm starting to wonder what I came home with. I'm on my fourth coin and I'm bout to post a 1942 Dime with obvious doubling for help. It will be in the error forum. :D

I will likely be getting them certified, as for how much, I like to think as much as I can get. Did you see them?

I saw the 1909-S indian but didn't know if that was what you were talking about or not. What I was talking about that I saw that was "wrong" with the proof set was that its not a proof set at all. The 1909-S is definitely Post Mint Damage but I know nothing about them to tell you if its authentic or anything like that but did recognize it as a rare date/mm. I don't know why someone would do that to the coin if it was real. I remember my grandfather saying he had found some coins like this and he felt the person did it on purpose so no one would want it in their collection. My grandfather was a little strange so you would have to really know him to understand the context this was said in. He hoarded everything including coins and auto parts from when he owned a service station in the 40's and 50's. he had every NOS belt, hose, tubs of grease and oil cans and even the lifts from his service station in one of the many storage buildings he had on his 6 acres of land

Too bad for the ugly graffiti on that 1909-S Indian. For those who want to trade your 1877's, you might want to reconsider that is NOT good for the coin's value (!)
