You're right about someone covering the scratches with some compound--what a mess! Must be related to the crap they use to fill-in diamonds after laser burning out the black spots.

Oh well, it is better than the one that I had, which is headed for the scrap pile.
Do not scrap it, find it a good home!

OK JBuck,

Let's see how this goes. I opened an Ecrater site just for you.

Not really, but check it out. Let me know what you think.

Well done!

I would much rather see the coins go to another collector or silver hoarder than to the scrap heap.

I hate this coin so much that I am carrying it around in my pocket. Maybe it will wear down to a XF or so and I will start liking it better.
Anybody ever do that? Carry around an abused coin?
But the cartwheel I am afraid is gone forever.

Yep. Once in awhile the best treatment for an abused coin is "natural" circulation.

Looks like the old cigar smoke trick was done to it.

Cigar Smoke? Would make a coin do this?

Would you elaborate? Please?

cigar smoke will not scratch it but will put that residue on it that can hide some impairments on the coin

You were right the first time.

http://www.ecrater.com is a free "mall". Anyone can sell there, there is no listing, pix or FVF. You can have multiple stores, in fact, it's encouraged for SEO.

To encourage the idea of a mall, you are extremely limited in how to set up a listing. They all look the same, but you don't see some of the gaudy nonsense that you will on ebaY

Each store has a name, like coinspa in your example or http://coins.ecrater.com is one of mine.

Guarantees? In the real world, if you want guarantees, don't cross the street. I rarely hear of a problem, it's a nice group, like ccf, and like forumdad, Sergio doesn't put up with any crap.

It's been around for years, and recently celebrated its one millionth sale.

Yep, like biggfredd says, there are no guarantees. But I would bet that there are less problems with Ecrater sales than ebay sales. Good bunch of people.
CoinSpa is my site, just went live with it, and I have no intention of messing with anyone over. In this case, as with biggfredd, you have the opportunity to "get to know" who you are dealing with through the forums.
Hey! I just noticed the Ecrater icon at the top of the post. That is so cool! I'll have to figure out how to make mine work . . . . .
Oops, this is getting off track ....
Thad, do we think that the coin got worked over with a Scotchbrite, then got the cigar smoke?

I just checked yours, I got:

/includes_eBay/inc.rss.asp, line 74

I don't remember setting mine up, maybe forumdad did.
