When you say "low ball sets" what exactly do you mean. Like the lowest possible grade coin but was still in circulation? I haven't gone though any rolls for quite a few years, but I use to back in the 80's. I use to search dime and quarter rolls looking for any silver coins of any grade and pull them. I would get at least 1-2 pieces from each roll. I once found a 1874-25 cents in decent grade.

SPP: is there much interest in lower grade(I'm assuming you mean lower grade) sets in the US or overseas? Your topic got me thinking that it would be pretty easy to put together a set ( or at least almost a set) if quality wasn't a issue. I'm sure there are a lot of us here who would be willing to help out a fellow collector if we could.

Can't believe this day and age people are stupid enough to still be coin roll hunting. You do know that it is near impossible to find a bank that is willing to buy those rolls back don't you. Sure all of them will sell them to you but then none of them wants to buy those hundreds of rolls back.

Dogchow, some would say the same from those that get their coins from ebay, and for the same reason.

Hi spp. I myself have assembled complete sets including major and minor varieties selecting the best coins found to date.
one cents 1920 to 2011
one cents 1937 to 1996
5 cents 1922 to 2011
5 cents 1937 to 1981

I am happy to have every year I am after and sets of compositions.

The banks do not give me any hassles when I go in with 50 rolls in hand to deposit.
They do not act too happy if you trade one box for another of the same amount.

I do the same thing as cladhunter13. I buy boxes from a few different banks and return to others. I search both cents and nickels. I have never thought of assembling a low ball set. I recently began collecting errors and that is what I am searching the rolls for. I could easily put one together though as I thousands of both copper 1 cent and pure nickel 5 cent coins. I think I am a hoarder.

One of the problems with low ball sets is Canadian Nickel coins wear like diamond... there is no equivalent in US coinage. But yeah I'd expect low ball sets of large cents at least.

Well SPP I have been roll hunting for 6 years in pennies (just moved to dimes) I keep everything from 1959 and older regardless of grade. Also all varieties to present. Almost have a roll of 1965 Type 1's 2 rolls of 53 SF and 15 1985 Pointed 5's. I could easily make sets up.

@dogchow...must be the area you live, I have never had a problem taking my rolls back to banks. I love to roll hunt and still score some pretty decent coins so I guess I'm one of the "stupid" ones.

@ dogchow, same as Lesinwestvan. I have taken back up to $700 in dimes/quarters some times and have nothing but smiles about it. They always joke with me when I return them saying then need a coin counter to save me time :P. I do this on a regular basis that the girls are starting to know me right away (about once or twice a week.) I buy form about 3 banks and drop at 2 although I do have about 7 more close if I need them. ALL TD. Roll hunting is way to fun for me to quit. love it to much. A

Question to OP.. what exactly is "Lowball sets" never heard that term before.

@dogchow Never had a problem, got 2 boxes of cents and 1 box of 5 cents to go back to the bank today.

@SPP For 5c and 10c I've gone ahead and started a "circulated grades" collection, mostly because I am concentrating on other denominations. I don't really intend to upgrade them, which is why it's different than my 50c or $1 collections where the circulation grades are definitely fillers.

I realise the collector base is probably an order of magnitude more in the US than in Canada, but, surprisingly, only silver dollars seem to be the Lowball series collected up here. Check out these sets in the US:

I have roll hunted a few penny rolls. I keep anything from the 1960s or before. The most recent interesting penny I found was a 1967 with the bird that looked like it had never been in circulation. It was not tarnished at all!

I've put together one complete set of silver Roosevelt dimes found roll hunting, and 2 or 3 75% complete. I've also assembled an almost complete set of silver Canadian dimes, 1940 on up, from roll hunting.

interesting topic here. I live in Buffalo NY and have put together sets of canadian small cents, nickels, dimes and quarters from circulation coins I have found in my United states rolls. Pennies are the most complete, only missing the key and semi key coins from the 20s and 30s.
but all of my sets, US and canadian are circulation sets. I put them together with whatever the best looking coins for each date and mint mark I can find are.
Not really low ball in my opinion, just circulated sets. I even keep all of my US sets in Dansco albums even though the coins in some cases are barely worth the albums cost.
I enjoy finding the sets way more then buying the coins. Anyone can buy something, but to find it is the real fun
also I am confused as to why you guys need to "tread lightly" maybe because you mention canadian coins? I have no idea, but yeah, some people on the site have been being really rude. Seems like it started sometime in the last 6 months since when I was regularly posting on this site. Oh well, best just to ignore comments that don't make sense to you, or put you off for whatever reason.
have fun
