Quote: the Chop MArk Club is alive and well Do you have any info on that, jfransch? I have found the website chopmarks.com but there is little sign of any activity. I was a member back in the early years but it just seemed to fade away.

Chopmarks usually translate to simple sayings like Be Happy, Good Luck, etc... some are distinctive to merchants as they pass through their hands obviously as an authentication mark of its silver content for the locals in and around this merchant. A friend of mine at work married a Malyasian woman ... he can translate these marks ... some he can't ... the merchant ones ... John Lorenzo Numismatist.

We bought a nice 1876s the other day with two chops. One looks like a reindeer, and the other like a stick figure.
Years ago, we got one that looked au, and almost missed the chop, a "T" that blended in with the bricks.

Holy mackerel! Thats an ashtray, right? Here is VACookeys chop trade. We both like chops. 4 or 5 max before it makes the coin truly damaged.

When I bought the coin years ago at a flea market it was about half full of some foul gradoo that I had to soak out. So it might actually have been an ashtray at one time! I have just kept it as an example of extreme chopping. Sad thing is the host coin is an 1874 Japanese Yen. With a mintage of 942k it would be quite a pricy item if it had a few hundred fewer chops.

The Chopmark Collector's Club is alive and well! No, the website isn't very active, and honestly I find it a bit difficult to navigate, but the majority of the activity is actually done through the quarterly newsletter. The editor of the newsletter is in Taiwan and does an excellent job of putting material together. For anyone interested in recieving the newsletter, there is a small subscription fee for mailed copies, and a recommended $5 fee for electronic copies only. :) Contact Colin at chopmarknews@gmail.com for more information. Please allow me to share a few of my favourite chopped coins.

I personally find chopmarks quite interesting. I have an 8 are with chops but I would love to have a US trade with chops, so long as the design isn't completely impaired with the chops. *** Edited by Staff - Please Review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***

Kinda depressing note from ANACS that considers Chop Marks as damage; I would like to submit an older ANACS holdered Trade dollar that was listed as; MS-60 Details Chop Marks 1874-CC TR$ 2892941 Chopmarked Would this coin, or any other Trade dollar with MS-60 Details, be considered for an actual grade, minus the "Details" (which is considered negative) designator?ANACS reply; Sorry, chopmarks will always result in a Details grade. I am one that believes anything that was done outside the mint is damage, I mean its called Post Mint Damage for a reason and can include everything from a light cleaning to someone putting their initials on a coin. So even though everyone is welcome to collect what they like, these coins just have no place in my collection no matter what any of the TPG's say is acceptable

It's up to the individual to decide what to collect.
I didn't like the old graded/bodybag system, which in effect said a scratched, cleaned, etc coin went from $1000 to worthless.
