I got this @ Staples & put about 40 Morgans in 2x2's 1st day w/not 1 problem. You should also get the "Optima" staples to go with it. Maybe $1 more than standard staples but they do make a big difference. http://www.staples.com/Swingline-Op...oduct_569580

When looking at pics of a flat clinch and a normal stapler, the only difference seems to be the front plate under the "head." On a normal stapler the "slit" the tines of the staple are forced into has a ridge in the center which bends the tines upwards. I am wondering if it would simply work to spend a few bucks for an el cheapo stapler at a dollar store, spend a minute or so to grind the center bump out of the slit with a Dremel tool, and spend the rest of the 44.00 to buy silver?

Some things aren't worth farting with imo Earle, I bought two Rapid S17 flat clinch staplers on ebay for 20 bucks and I already had a larger electric flat clinch I bought at an auction from a closed legal office.

I know on some staplers that if you push the little plate up, you can turn it around to not have the little grooves. Try that.

The only kind of these I personally have encountered has a slit which causes the tines to be bent in outwards curves instead of inward. Someone might make a dual flat/normal one that would work though. If not - you've invented a new, marketable item to help finance buying more coins for your collection I know if there is not groove to guide the tines you end up with a random mess.

The obvious answer to this is to buy self adhesive 2x2's. dead easy to use and no nasty sharp bits of steel to scratch the other coins with

I'm suspicious of the consistency of any adhesive over time. Does it turn base, does it turn acidic, does it turn brittle , does it get thinner ? Nothing stays the same forever, so I'm just... reluctant to test anything on decent coins.

Flat staples are the way to go if not using airtites. I bought mine and 2000 staples for under $15 at the last show.

As ironic as it sounds, don't cheap out and get a stapler from Staples because they malfunction. $44 will do you the rest of your life, just make sure it's not made mostly of plastic. The parts have to line up real well. I bought one last year and I regret it. Just in the last month I've been plying my staples down and it works just fine. I have to start buying and filling up more pages.
The problem that I encountered is that one end of the staple would be fine, but the other end would curve strangely, like an ingrown toenail. I think it was simply the thickness of the cardboard or maybe a weakness in the staple. It's in stapler heaven right now - or stapler heck.

There are numerous solutions to this problem. 1. Do not use cardboard flips. 2. Use the ones with self adhesives 3. Use a standard staple, place on a hard service and hit with a hammer. 4. Use standard staples and pinch with pliers. 5. Use super glue to seal forever. 6. Use tape to seal all edges 7. Hire someone to put your coins in those 2x2's and staple them flat with whatever they can find. 8. Stop collecting coins 9. Place all coins in a jar, can, box. 10. Call that company called Swingline, that makes Staplers and complain to them no one carries their products that staple flat. This will accomplish nothing but then too so will most of the above. 11. I'd suspect that Wizard would carry those.

Virg Marshall has an excellent one around $10.
Not only flat clinch, it's ergonomic, easy-squeeze and will go through 50 sheets without excess effort.

I had 2 different staplers both regulars and both would jam up and I'd want to throw them out. Got the flat stapler from Staples plus 10 thousand staples, used all the staples got more and had no problem at all, best move I've done in a long time.

DBM - stopped by Staples today in search of 10M size staples for my previous MAX brand flat cinch - NO LUCK.
But, per your suggestion, the stapler you advised of, was on sale for $7.99....and it takes regular staples. Thanks!
Staples product #39898 Works great for 2X2's $9.99
