These are completely different dies- notice the extra little bump at the top denticle on the top illustration. Notice where the actual island connects with the denticle- the top illustration has it at the bottom of the denticle, where the bottom illustration has it at the top. Notice the angle that the island connects with the canoe- the top angle is about 30 degrees, while the bottom island connects at about 45 degrees. GOod eye.

staceyc777, since you posted this example in January, I have examined hundreds of 1969 dollars without finding a single example. I would like to include your 1969 dollar coin into a variety volume. Please send me a message via the forum.

Finally, after 3 years of hunting, I have found one... definitely a polished die, short waterlines, at the stern.

Hi! I pick up nickel dollars and fifty cent pieces from the bank whenever they get them and are offered. Sometimes I can get $3 each for the dollars or use them to trade for other coins.

This variety was featured in this month's issue of the CN Journal, in the Canadian Spice column (Volume 60, page 36). CCF and the original poster of this thread were given full acknowledgements....

haha, of course I find this thread just after packing up a hundred 69s to go back to the bank. Oh well, someone else can have the joy of searching them.

Since 2012, when this thread was originally posted, after searching tens of thousands of nickel dollars, I have only found eight of this 1969 short water lines variety. But of the eight, I did manage to find a real gem!! http://www.PCGS.com/cert/33950783

SPP, congrats on finding the gem. One thing that still bothers me about this is that you attribute the short waterlines to a polished die yet the pics provided by the OP clearly show the waterlines and island of each coin have a different relationship to the denticles, something which I believe can't be achieved merely by polishing. The pics in your article do not match the pics in this thread. The OP's SWL coin is very different from the one pictured in your article. Is the first pic provided by the OP not a '69? What do you believe is the actual cause?

Quote: Is the first pic provided by the OP not a '69? What do you believe is the actual cause? I have looked for a 1969 dollar with waterlines like what the OP posted - I have yet to find any... the OP has never returned any messages I have sent him. I suspect his second photo (to illustrate 'normal' waterlines) was a 1968, as Alexer also observed. Here is a normal 1969 dollar I have: Here is the short waterlines variety (which is similar to the 1968 No Island, in many respects): Everything I have seen to date mirrors my two images - which leads to the logical conclusion of Die Deterioration (over polishing of the reverse die).
