You should go into your search knowing that 99% of those "unsearched" rolls on ebay really have been searched, and all you are buying are the leftovers someone else didn't want. Avoid all auctions proclaiming "unsearched" as the first rule, and second, only buy rolls or other coin lots from sellers who are NOT coin dealers! Search the sellers other items and feedback... if you see other items, anything other than coins, proceed, otherwise, stay away and save your money. Buy individual coins rather than "unsearched" rolls. Do you REALLY believe that Flying Eagle cent or Mercury dime ended up on an old roll of pennies by accident? They are scams, clear and simple. Stay far away! |

Why bother with ebay as long as you have access to rolled coin at the bank or credit union? If you do not I understand. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

I been getting rolls from the bank we deal with for years but lately I been noticing that when I dump the coins out of the roll they all come out either all heads up or reverse up meaning they been searched ,these are customer wrapped rolls ,is it better to get the rolls from a bank that has the Brink's or Wells Fargo rolls?

I think it is a toss up! Sometimes you can get lucky with customer wrapped rolls that come from someone just unloading a coin jar, but I feel better about getting bank rolls. I have a friend who collects nickels and I've turned down rolls at the bank that had his initials on them...those have certainly been searched!

I put my initials on mine too but you dont have to..another thing lately I been getting a lot of short rolls .Last week I picked up 10 rolls of dimes and one roll looked small ,I counted it before looking through it and it was two short,started counting all of then and found another roll that was one short..I usually search for nickles and I've found maybe one roll in ten will be short..I told the bank that they needed to have everyone initial their rolls.

Come on, there is no such thing as an unsearched roll coming from a dealer! If you were a dealer, would you sell an unsearched roll if you knew there was a chance there might be something valuable in it?
I'm sure if you pressed them on this, they'd come up with all sorts of Clintonian logic as to the definition of "unsearched."

I hate to see everyone saying it's all scams because I was even thinking about cashing in on it in a legit kind of way. The scam part of it is the fact that these guys put an "epic" coin on the ends and say "Holy cow! Who knows!" No ... you put the coins on the end, came up with a fun story and created an auction. I actually thought about making an auction that even says what the other guys do and sell mine in a more legitimate fashion.
Saw an auction last night where it said he bought these amazing rolls from a guy at an estate auction and the guy told him there's good stuff in it blah blah but there's two FB BU mercs on the ends. Auctions currently at almost $700.

I watch the roll auctions for fun, and occasionally print one off to show to my Grandpa, hundreds of dollars for a roll of pennies, it is amazing. I think all you need is a couple of straw buyers and anyone can get into selling unsearched rolls of pennies on ebay. It's not really a scam, it's legitimate, like the banking ponzi derivate scam, social networks, RE bubble, taxes, you know .. things that seem cool and necessary, yet all they do is slowly suck the life out of you. STILL, you will see many of these roll auctions end up going for the price of the best coin in the roll, which incidentally is always obverse on the end of the roll. Edited by everything

It may be a legitimate sale on ebay, but it's NOT ethical and it is not in the standards of the ANA, PNG or any other legitimate numismatic organization, and certainly not something I would associate myself with!
