Quote: I haven't been to a coin show in about 6 months. I'm currently sitting in the corner on the floor shivering and pulling out chunks of my hair... Possibly said as a joke but that does sort of happen to me. Since we have 2 to 4 coin shows a Month, every Month, all year long and all within about 15 miles or less. If the weather or something else happens to make me miss an entire Month of no coin shows, I really start getting irritable.

Close your eyes and imagine not being able to collect coins, or look at your own coins, or even come here to ccf for a day. Now imagine a week without it. Really see yourself getting up, showering, brushing your teeth, going to work, going to bed, seven times in a row without collecting. Now imagine a month. Now a year.
Did your heart rate go up? Did you start rationalizing how that's not possible, how no one would actually stop you, how you would defeat any measures taken to stop you? Were you not able to think about it at all as your mind diverted to something else because such a thought was too uncomfortable?
That works for almost anything you think you might be addicted to.

Quote: t is interesting to see that there is an ad on this page that discusses drug or alcohol addiction. Coincidence? Ad space selling is getting more sophisticated. Software finds keywords on a page and matches the ads to them.

@glenzy1 I agree with you. I am like that a lot as well. I think that collecting can turn into an addiction very fast. I'm not at that far of an extreme but I have had to look at what I was doing and say " Hey, you need to cool down!" I kind of do things in spurts too. I will be looking to complete a certain section of a collection....take a bit of a break...then try and fill another section...little break and so on and so forth. Find this helps me to not get TOO involved and keep it within my financial means. CHEERS!

, NorthBayGuy1977! Quote: The addiction seems to arrise when one starts to "need" to continue in that activity. There is an obsession. There is an emotional or physical attactment to the activity that is put before all other aspects of ones life including their own wellbeing and that of their families Sounds like John Ford (?), who put together a multi-million dollar coin collection in part by making fake California gold bars, or Sheldon, who allegedly got a fantastic collection of early coppers by trading his lower grade coins even up for collections he had access to.

What a great thread to read, I just started this hobby a few weeks ago and I have worked on sorting through the 2 5 gallon water jugs full of all coins that I have just thrown in there over the past years, I came across some nice old coins and decided to look them up and started reading on coin collecting and I literally have done nothing since. I realized just today that I'm hooked fully when I had some change in pocket(already scanned through) and my drink was $1.05 and I thought to myself, Give her $2.00 so you can get $0.95 cent back in change and a shot to score out the register.

Strong bump. Sheldon was a thief who had access to the Smithsonian's National Coin Collection which he used to "upgrade" his collection of large cent varieties. Eric Newman discusses this scandal in great detail. Sheldon contributed a lot to our knowledge of die varieties of large cents as well as the grading scale we all use, but he was caught raiding our national collection.

What about the coin collector who spends half his/her pension on coins? Put me down as spending more than 100% on coins when the opportunity presents itself. I'm pretty sure the only thing I was addicted to was work. I quit working when I was 49. That's when I looked back at the last ten years in which I paid close to 50% State, local & federal taxes. One example I looked at here is someone who is a Service Manager working @ 65 hours a week. I was in the same field, different facet. That can be a grind. When he isn't at work it isn't my business what he does with his money & time. I'm just glad he spends time here. Someday the shoe may be on the other foot & you may become the seller. Thank your lucky stars if I want your coin and I'm that pension guy who busted his tail for many years and wants to buy your coin. I don't mind you making money off me. I already made mine. It's a hobby to most people including me. I'm not much for giving advise but a little note; Never mix up work with play. Bust your tail. Pay your bills and yourself first. Do what makes you happy with the rest of your money. After all, your health comes first. If it makes you happy, enjoy coin collecting. That's healthy. Addiction? I don't think so. Obsession? It can be. Do some spend more than they can afford? Sure. Ain't coins great!

I also took a long sabbatical from the hobby. Hubs and I both semi-retired about 6 years ago and during our full time working careers we did not take much time to smell the roses. Well, pretty much no time too. This hobby allows me to fill in some of the newly acquired time on my hands and give me something to look forward to. Coin shows, coin club meetings, new coins arriving in the mail new albums etc. And I am pretty guilty of spending pretty much 80% or so of my disposable income on coins. Especially if one of the 3 or 4 coin shows a year close enough for me to go to is around the corner. He has his interests he enjoys and I have my coin collection. And yes....I am pretty addicted to it.
