That's similar to my averages. About 1/7th of my silver dime finds are Mercury dimes, which is nice. I get more silver from dimes and nickels than I do from halves lately.

I have had similar experiences as well. However, I do not find Mercury dimes very often.

To answer your question Fred, yes, it is a waste of MY time searching dimes, or any other coin for that matter. My time would be better spent chasing my other hobbies, or errands around the house, etc. Only you can decide if it's worth your time. Personally, I am hooked on the hobby and will probably never give it up. There is no profit involved, if that matters. My find rate is one silver rosie per $120 searched. Last year I searched $20k in dimes.

It's up to you to decide if it is worth your time. Here are my averages out of 553,650 searched if it helps:
Silver Roosie: 272--1/2035 coins--1/0.81 boxes
Silver Mercury: 23--1/24,071 coins--1/9.63 boxes
80% silver Canadian: 21--1/26,364 coins--1/10.55 boxes
50% silver Canadian: 4--1/138,413 coins--1/55.37 boxes

Total silver dimes: 320--1/1730 coins--1/0.69 boxes
That's almost 23 ounces!

I find more silver dimes at my local convenience store on a weekly basis than searching boxes. Dude handed over 23 last Thursday that he saved for me last week, and I got them at face. He had none this morning, but it is only Monday. Week before last I scored 6 silver quarters and a 40% half.

Think it really depends on you, you like the search or you like the finds

Thank you all for your comments. I really enjoy the search, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to up my withdrawal from $125 a week (a box pennies and nickels), to $250 a week (box of dimes). Thanks again.

If I pick up 2 boxes, and find 2 keepers, those 2 dimes have cost me:

Pickup/round trip=$7 (w gas @3.50 gal)
Dump/round trip=$7

LOL so those two silver dimes have cost me only $14 and my time, before any sale profit.

Just sayin...

I have 6 banks all within a 3 minute drive from my office, I go out for lunch everyday so I stop off at the banks while on my lunch hour so by combining running by the bank and getting my lunch costs almost nothing extra. Besides not very many hobbies don't cost very much to enjoy like this one does, but personally if I have to worry too much about the cost then it isn't a hobby I should be involved in.

Just my $.02

Two gallons of gas to do banking, round trip. Gotta have that good 'ol V8 F150, anything less just doesn't cut it, besides, it's paid for
I live outside the city. No natural gas, no catv, no land line phone, no next-door neighbors, truly wonderful!

Is it worth ten bucks to go to a movie? Not to me.

General consensus is about a silver dime per box, not worth the cost of getting and getting rid of.

Is it worth doing for fun and a few bucks out of pocket? That's your call. I know a guy who did 35,000 miles of joyriding a year, because he enjoyed it.

I find 3 silver dimes per box
odds are you aren't gonna get rich searching boxes of coins
if you want to put together a circulated set of roosies its doable
I found all but 6 from circulation in 2 years
I suggest dimes a million times over
but everyone in every area has different find rates
do what you love, thats what hobbies are all about
