Quote: You got some 'splaining to do... First, the post office should explain their uneven application of postal rates , as discussed here. In my case, the local PO told me a single coin ( 0.4 oz total), mailed in a standard envelope to Canada, is a "package" and subject to $3 postage--a rather crazy interpretation of their rates. My solution was to include the coin inside a letter, and pay the usps letter rate to Canada ($0.85)--a saner interpetation if you ask me. In other news, all the coins have shipped.

Quote: My solution was to include the coin inside a letter I often ship single coins in 2x2's in letter envelopes as well, it is much cheaper. (Like you pointed out)

Thank you so very much. I have so much to learn about coins....but I am tickled pink with my new 10 pence. I honestly picked it just because it had a cat -- well, a lion, on it and he is gorgeous. I really do feel like I'm being pulled to the dark side.....

Heard of saf-t-mailers? Make your own. Ask the supermarket or drive-thru to save you the one-sided corrugated paper they use for displays. Cut it a little smaller than the envelope and almost twice as tall, put coin, loose or in 2x2, on the wavy side, fold over and staple close enuf that the coin can't shift. you can put three coins across in a large envelope. - coin can't move or tear out of envelope
- coin is cushioned
- envelope is pretty evenly thick, so nothing to catch

Boggfredd, Thanks for the advice--I've got the shipping side to coins well-covered. In the case of this giveaway, I wanted a cheaper method--and I found it.
